What amazing writing, oratory, wit, and story telling. Thank you for sharing your truths and telling the heart wrenching story of “emancipation”.

I really enjoy Bill Bryson and this book did not disappoint. Full of all the complex, technicolor characters that bring the period to life in a way that most history books can't.

My eyes are now a little more open but I am aware that it is but a glimpse at the horrors of slavery.

Gates does an amazing job explaining the problem and then laying out intelligently, clearly and in simple terms what must be done to avert the disaster.

Narrators voice sounds like a computer generated version of that mean teacher you had in 5th grade. while raising very valid points, the author just repeats herself over and over: white person, you are a racist and will always be a racist, but it isn't your fault because you were raised in a racist system. now you need to spend the rest of your life searching for and interrupting your racism. thats about it. expected more nuanced insight.

The personal story driven history is often shallow and less accurate than event driven narratives. The first few chapters focused on introducing the characters to the reader and I almost quit as I thought the book was going to be no more than a collection of hazy memories and anecdotes from a trio of characters that the author had clearly interviewed intensively. however, I stuck with it and was rewarded. Isabel Wilkerson does a very good job of weaving in the facts and context of the period and blends scholarly research with meaning personal stories. the selection of the 3 main characters becomes clear and the overall result is both intellectually satisfying and emotionally meaningful. Highly recommend!

I find Ezra Klein to be one of the most thoughtful political journalists today. Even though he is just 35, his ability to consume information and synthesize it into coherent, thought provoking and clear narratives is amazing. On top of that, he does it in an introspective manner, always double checking his biases and reason and open to other points of view. While his views are liberal, he doesn't demonize conservatives but he doesn't pull punches either. He epitomizes constructive, intelligent, factual political journalism.

Lots of interesting information but not prescriptive and sort of rambles through a large scope of topics.

Brown is a fabulous author and story teller. I thought the narrator delivered the book well but I can see why others might not agree. Fascinating and interesting research and findings.
