Stay for the story...and nothing else

If you're like me, you're intrigued by the story synopsis. Near future sci fi is always exciting to me, but this was a slog. The story concept was okay at the beginning, but the character development was nonexistent. These are less than one dimensional characters and it makes this book completely forgettable. It's not the worst book I've ever read, but I'm not okay with having spent money on it either.
Look elsewhere.

Lives in the shadow of The Remaining: Book 1

Bottom line: if you like The Remaining storyline, you're going to appreciate more in this universe. 100% worth a credit.

This is a solid book. Molles builds on the characters and storylines that he has build over his series. In my opinion, though, none of The Remaining series captured the greatness of the very first book. My hope was that Harden would be able to start anew somehow with this "spin-off" series which turned out to be just another sequel.
Here's the thing though. Molles has enough credit built up with Remaining fans to pump out plenty more sequels before fans start falling off so sequels are always going to be relatively well received.
My middling rating lies not in the writing or story execution but in the misleading titling that leads me to believe that this is a fresh start for fans of The Remaining in the same universe. Instead, it turned into the second best thing: "The Remaining: Book 7"

Great story with some strange choices

I liked this book. If there were a few minor changes I'd love this book. There are some strange choices that make this a bit of a confusing read to me. Let me say, though, that this definitely deserves a credit if you like sci-fi books.

The choices that confound me can be summed up into three groups.
1. The performance is good except for the fact that the reader chooses a very old-school monotoned robotic voice for any computer or android. This makes for some weird situations in which there is clearly an intent for human-like interaction between an android and human but the vocal distinctions are that one talks like a Dalek and the other speaks normally. It's a confusing choice for much of the book but then becomes utterly baffling when an android is supposedly fooling humans into thinking it's human while speaking so ridiculously. It's a choice made for just a few characters but it effectively and consistently brings you out of the story and becomes a distraction.
2. There are some word choices that also brings you out of the story. These happen every few chapters and can probably go unnoticed if you choose not to listen for them.
3. Finally, there's an underlying suspicious behavior by many characters that goes unresolved. For a while I thought it was just a conclusion that I had jumped to by myself, but the protagonist also asks similar questions of these characters. I was a little disappointed to find that these suspicions aren't satisfactorily addressed by the end of the book. It may be resolved in future books.

Overall, this is a good book that deserves a chance for fans of the genre. I look forward to the next installments.

This is a book of platitudes, anecdotes and quotes mixed with thoughts of what changing your mindset towards giving MIGHT do rather than evidence of what giving DOES do on any level. If you like generic self help books then this is for you. If you want evidence and solid inspiration to change your mindset towards giving, look elsewhere.

In my mind, in order to get 5 stars across the board, this must be one of the best books I've ever read. In Harm's Way is probably not one of the best books I've ever read. Time will tell if I keep coming back to it in my thoughts for years to come.
If it's not one of the best books I've ever read, then why 3 sets of 5 stars? Because of what it is.
It is well written, gripping, terrifying, suffocating, aggravating, and true. Above all of this, it tells the story of men who gave their lives in what might be the worst manner imaginable for our country. For this reason, above all others, In Harm's Way deserves 5 stars.

This was run of the mill to me. My respect for the late author and Mill's efforts to keep Rapp alive as well as the extraordinary work of the narrator will keep me listening through the end, though.

After so many books, despite their brevity, I always get concerned that the quality is going to decline. Fortunately, I felt this was the best one so far. It's tense from beginning to end and highlights all the inter-platoon relationship struggles all while fighting off the enemy.

What did you love best about Armada?

It had a great, fast-paced story, lots of laugh-out-loud humor, and it spoke to the gamer inside of me. Even though I'm not hardcore or anything, I felt like I got the jokes and that made me feel all special on the inside.

What other book might you compare Armada to and why?

This is where all the negativity comes in from the reviewers. They wanted an exact replica of Ready Player One. This is not Ready Player One. At least not exactly. It's still Earnest Cline though. No...if I had to... Yes, I think this is the love child of Ready Player One and Swarm by BV Larson. Read by Wil Wheaton? What more can you ask?

Have you listened to any of Wil Wheaton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes and I have forever decided that, if a book is good enough to be read by Wil Wheaton, then it's good enough for me. Books of proof: Ready Player One, Lock In (Scalzi), and now Armada.
CHOOSE WISELY FROM NOW ON WHEATON! YOU COULD RUIN LITURATURE FOR ME!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I stood once or twice but, to answer the spirit of the question - most definitely yes.
