Great story, terrible reader
Revisado: 03-24-25
The reader’s cadence was very sing-song and artificial. I thought it might be because I had it on 1.5 speed, but when I slowed it down to regular speed, it was even worse! Ugh. Good thing the story was excellent.

This podcast series was so much more than just about nut heists. Very informative about where our food comes from and how dependent we are on California.

Lame twist can’t save this predictable book
Revisado: 12-18-24
Can a book be both predictable and surprising at the same time? I didn’t think so until I read this book. For most of the book, I found it went where I expected it to go, but the last chapter did surprise me and left me questioning everything, as I’m sure the author intended. However, it felt more like it was tacked on because otherwise it WOULD have been horribly predictable and boring. Some might like this twist at the end. But I found it somewhat lame.

She’s clearly a lawyer
Revisado: 05-10-19
I’ve listened to autobiographies read by the author before and they’ve always felt like we are chatting over coffee. As they tell their story, they express the emotion highs and lows and, as the listener, I feel them too. However, Michelle Obama presents her story in the passionless way of a lawyer, overenunciating words and speaking at a methodical pace. She has some really wonderful insights to share and an, at times, moving story to tell. Yet she spoke with the same measured tones when telling of her college friend dying of cancer in her 20s as she uses when describing falling in love with Barack and when describing her life in the White House. I just couldn’t connect with her.

Revisado: 11-05-18
Trevor Noah brings humor and thoughtfulness to the story of his upbringing in South Africa. Having him read his story was like sitting down with him over coffee. It was a treat to hear him pronounce the various languages that he speaks.

Needs better sound mixing
Revisado: 04-25-18
A good performance by the readers; however, the sound effects were too loud in comparison. During the 2014 World Cup coverage, the sound effects often drowned out the speakers, a little more than seemed intentional.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

Too many metaphors
Revisado: 11-27-16
An excellent performance of an excellent story. My only complaint is the author's overuse of similes and metaphors. EVERYTHING had to be compared. And sometimes, it was just a repetition of what was just said. I did get past that after a while and was able to enjoy the story. The reader was excellent.

Historia
1987. There’s only one person who has ever truly understood fourteen-year-old June Elbus, and that’s her uncle, the renowned painter Finn Weiss. Shy at school and distant from her older sister, June can only be herself in Finn’s company; he is her godfather, confidant, and best friend. So when he dies, far too young, of a mysterious illness her mother can barely speak about, June’s world is turned upside down. But Finn’s death brings a surprise acquaintance into June’s life - someone who will help her to heal....

Clueless
Revisado: 03-08-16
Rifka Brunt writes a very authentic clueless teenager in June Elbus. I found myself alternately annoyed with her and identifying with her (I would have been near her age in 1987). The story seemed to try to tackle a little too much at once --sisterly camaraderie, coming of age, AIDS in the 80s, love--but was still enjoyable. However, I was not a fan of the reader. Rubinate has a breathy quality to her voice that was trying to convey a young protagonist, but was really just annoying. She also had a slight uptalk which really grated on me.

Historia
Verily, the story Biff has to tell is a miraculous one, filled with remarkable journeys, magic, healings, kung fu, corpse reanimations, demons, and hot babes. Even the considerable wiles and devotion of the Savior's pal may not be enough to divert Joshua from his tragic destiny. But there's no one who loves Josh more (except maybe "Maggie," Mary of Magdalan) and Biff isn't about to let his extraordinary pal suffer and ascend without a fight.

Poor editing
Revisado: 04-27-15
The presentation of this audiobook does the actual book a disservice. The story had me laughing out loud, but the nonexistent transitions between sections and random insertions of music made it a difficult listen. As for the narrator, he did well overall, but his voices for Joshua and Biff were too similar and I had difficulty knowing who was talking at times. I recommend this book, but not the audiobook.
