Historia
It’s 2026, and catastrophe has struck from an unexpected source. The Alpha Centauri supernova has risen like a second sun, rushing Earth toward its last summer. Floods, fires, starvation, and disease paralyze the planet. In a blue aurora flash of gamma rays, all microchips worldwide are destroyed, leaving an already devastated Earth without communications, transportation, weaponry, or medicine. The disaster sets three groups of survivors on separate quests. A militant cult seizes the opportunity to free their leader, known as the Eye of God, from the long-term coma to which a court sentenced her.

Good story - bad narration
Revisado: 03-06-25
Loved the story but the narrator was not very good. He spoke so slow I had to listen at 1.4 speed and his speech was monotone and has a weird repetitive pattern that was annoying.

Historia
Daniel Rice is a government science investigator whose specialty is solving seemingly intractable problems through scientific inquiry. But Daniel's intellectual strength is sorely tested by the bizarre realities he finds in the quantum world. Extra dimensions of space trap the unwary, probability replaces cause and effect, and time isn't what anyone imagined. The other side of the mirror is a place full of dangers, but it's also somewhere a dedicated scientist can uncover secrets that connect humans with something greater.

Great story. Author’s style reminds me of Robert Sawyer’s books. Hard science fiction story with great characters and mystery.

Long boring story with no action
Revisado: 09-18-23
I am about 3/4 of the way through the book as I write this.
1. The description says, "modeled after the Star Wars and X-Files universes" - uh, no. There is absolutely nothing resembling Star Wars or X-files universes. Zip. Nada.
2. The novel seems to just keep jumping around from character to character, narrating their ordinary lives, every once in a while touching on the actual purpose of this book: An unknown alien race is suddenly awakened and attacking humanity.
As this is the first story in a series I guess that could be chalked up to setting the stage, but sheesh! It is very boring and I can't wait for it to be over at this point. I keep hoping the action will start and the story will coalesce into a single story instead of a series of vignettes about boring soap opera stuff.

Missed opportunity
Revisado: 07-01-23
Parallel earths- so many story opportunities available- yet Taylor spends most of this book having his characters yapping about politics and government. Very boring. The only drama comes from a few vignettes of anti-social misfits who cause trouble here and there but are swiftly dealt with.
Very disappointed. 2 stars for the story.
As usual though, Ray Porter’s narration was top notch. So 5 stars for that.

Revisado: 04-29-21
I loved the story but the narrator Scott Sowers was not good. Like a bad actor reading his lines from cue cards. But the story is great, I am just now listening to this for the second time and I am enjoying it all over again.

Historia
Richard K. Morgan has received widespread praise for his astounding 25th-century novels featuring Takeshi Kovacs, and has established a growing legion of fans. Mixing classic noir sensibilities with a searing futuristic vision of an age when death is nearly meaningless, Morgan returns to his saga of betrayal, mystery, and revenge, as Takeshi Kovacs, in one fatal moment, joins forces with a mysterious woman who may have the power to shatter Harlan's World forever.

Historia
In the 25th century, humankind has spread throughout the galaxy, monitored by the watchful eye of the U.N. While divisions in race, religion, and class still exist, advances in technology have redefined life itself. Now, assuming one can afford the expensive procedure, a person's consciousness can be stored in a cortical stack at the base of the brain and easily downloaded into a new body (or "sleeve") making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen.

I actually liked the TV series better.
Revisado: 10-23-18
For the first time I actually liked the TV adaptation better than the book. I found Morgan's writing style a bit hard to follow. He is overly descriptive of complete minutiae and by the time he is done describing something completely irrelevant to the story you lose track of what the hell is going on. This might be OK reading in text, but in an audiobook, it made me actually tune out and have to rewind often to just figure out what was going on. The narration was good although McLaren really needs to work on his female voices and "screaming" which sounded more like a hoarse whisper.

Revisado: 03-23-18
Basically here is the story: They fight a single space battle with the imperial forces for the whole book. Pretty much like the last book. Nothing happens in the overall story arc.
Apparently Currie has decided to just milk the success of the first few books and not actually do any creative writing. This book has no character development, no story development. It is nothing but an agonizingly slow and detailed description of a space battle. Every laser beam and missile is described, every ship movement. GAH! I zoned out during much of this book and didn't miss a thing. VERY disappointed in you Mr. Currie.

Good story - lousy narration
Revisado: 02-22-18
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Only in print. The story was great but it was painful to listen to the narrator. David Marantz reads this novel like a bad actor with a mouthful of marbles. This is the first book I have listened to by him so I cannot say if he is as bad on his other books, but I don't intend to find out. I will definitely avoid any future books read by him.
What was one of the most memorable moments of End of an Era?
The entire story was interesting. I love novels by Robert Sawyer and this one did not disappoint.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of David Marantz?
Anyone. Ray Porter would be good or Mark Boyett. Heck a robot narrator might have been better.

Historia
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Mark Boyett does a wonderful job with the voices and narration.
