Young adult story with sex scenes
Revisado: 02-15-25
I finished it, but I won’t be completing the series.
The premise of the story had potential but the author couldn’t carry it off. The main character, Lor, was supposed to be a tough survivor, but she whined and whimpered like Bella Swan. The characters weren’t developed at all, nor were they described in enough physical detail to be able to picture them. All the space was taken up with the “tough survivor’s” insecurity. The prose was simplistic and a bit anachronistic at times.
As a whole it read like a YA novel because of the style of writing and the immaturity of the characters. There were some sex scenes though, so maybe not entirely YA.
Oh, and there’s nothing wrong with the Young Adult genre, but this entry just wasn’t a very good example. Also, I don’t think it was MEANT to be YA; it’s classified as “adult.”

Narrator’s voice doesn’t fit the Character
Revisado: 10-19-24
If the book is written in first person, then the narrator’s voice has to fit the character. This Narrator has an old voice- about 56 years old (the voice, not necessarily the actor himself). But the character is much younger than that. I kept wondering why the character was acting so immature, and then I’d remember: oh, he’s supposed to be in his 30’s. It drove me absolutely crazy. The narrator is objectively very skilled, but completely inappropriate to the age of the character.

Four-star
Revisado: 09-27-23
I only gave the narration 3 stars because Kirby Heyborne read with some really weird phrasing. Otherwise the narration was good.
The story was solid, and the prose was competent. Neither reached the heights of “inspired,” but all in all it was a decent “read. “

Uneven : GOOD but BAD
Revisado: 07-14-23
The people who say it is great have a point: the characters and premise are likable and interesting. The narrator was good.
The people who said it was terrible have a point! The plot and characterization had major holes. The MC was written like she was in her late twenties, then in a re-write edited down to teens/early twenties but with a strange and uneven maturity. This series needs an editor to help the author smooth out those weird inconsistencies.
Judge your tolerance for a MC who’s “favorite old TV show” is Criminal Minds but can’t figure out when to CALL THE FBI and decide accordingly.

Predictable and Offensive
Revisado: 06-26-23
This book could have been titled “Victims of Abuse Being Terrible People.”
The story had several problems:
1: Portraying the mentally I’ll as dangerous criminals
2: graphic depictions of child abuse (not sexual, but bad enough). I don’t have any philosophical issues with telling a story about such a terrible -and real- issue, I just don’t want to read the details.
3: the reveal at the end was obviously from page 1.
4: there were maybe 3 decent characters and everyone else was terrible. The author was not able to create any characters for the reader to sympathize with. It was impossible to care about the outcome.

Atmospheric not Depressing
Revisado: 06-02-23
Many times “atmospheric “ novels can be real downers. Ellis balances her atmosphere with good relationships between the characters. Her plots are complex resulting in a completely satisfying mystery.
I knocked the performance down one star for occasionally over-exaggerating some character voices.

Great short story
Revisado: 05-17-23
I was hooked and looked forward to my commute to find out what happened next. Some reviewers were frustrated that the denouement comes largely as a “debrief” at the end of the story. Short stories often suffer from this type of structure and I was expecting this when I saw the 4 hour length. However I still found the story engaging and the characters compelling.

Historia
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

Soapy, huge plot hole, sad ending
Revisado: 10-19-22
Overall the book was ok. However, the plot rested over a GINORMOUS plot hole. I don’t want to spoil, so I’ll talk around it a bit. The main character’s mother had enough information to stop the action at the beginning, and any normal mother would have sat her daughter down and explained some things before her daughter left on her adventure. Oh! And her Doctors would have told her, and her brother, and- oh yeah- the POLICE would have clued her in BEFORE THE ACTION OF THE BOOK!! So you get to the end and say to yourself “wait a bit- wouldn’t she have known all this beforehand? Because (plot issues) aside, people would have TOLD her!”
