Beobrand is compelled by his brother's almost-certain murder to embark on a quest for revenge in the war-ravaged kingdoms of Northumbria. The land is rife with danger, as warlords vie for supremacy and dominion. In the battles for control of the region, new oaths are made and broken, and loyalties are tested to the limits. With no patronage and no experience, Beobrand must form his own allegiances and learn to fight with sword and shield. Relentless in pursuit of his enemies, he faces challenges which transform him from a boy to a man.

Fantastic book!
If you are looking for a fix to smooth your Bernard Cornwell craving, this is it.
It has a slow build in the beginning, but the characters come together nicely and the story is well told.
The narrator also gives an excellent performance.

Historia
In the latest installment of The Vampire Chronicles, Anne Rice summons up dazzling worlds to bring us the story of Armand—eternally young, with the face of a Botticelli angel. We go with Armand across the centuries to the Kiev Rus of his boyhood - a ruined city under Mongol dominion—and to ancient Constantinople, where Tartar raiders sell him into slavery. And in a magnificent palazzo in the Venice of the Renaissance we see him emotionally and intellectually in thrall to the great vampire Marius.

Great Story. Mediocre Reader.
Revisado: 12-29-20
Classic Anne Rice story.
The Reader was mediocre AT BEST.
I suggest listening at a faster speed to tolerate a voice that would better be used listing all the “begats” of Genesis.

Historia
An enchanting biography of the most resonant - and most necessary - chemical element on Earth. Carbon. It's in the fibers in your hair, the timbers in your walls, the food that you eat, and the air that you breathe. It's worth billions as a luxury and half a trillion as a necessity, but there are still mysteries yet to be solved about the element that can be both diamond and coal. Where does it come from, what does it do, and why, above all, does life need it?

BORING. INDULGENT.
Revisado: 03-18-20
There are many fascinating books about science phenomena out there, both written and read with superb skill.
This NOT one of them.
The author is a scientist that thinks his indulgent use of adjectives makes him a good storyteller.
It doesn’t.
The narrator, I think, would achieve great success reading IKEA instruction manuals.

Historia
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

Historia
Most children go through a dinosaur phase. Learning all the tongue-twisting names, picking favourites based on ferocity, armour, or sheer size. For many kids this love of ‘terrible lizards’ fizzles out at some point between starting and leaving primary school. All those fancy names slowly forgotten, no longer any need for a favourite. For all those child dino fanatics who didn’t grow up to become paleontologists, dinosaurs seem like something out of mythology. They are dragons, pictures in books, abstract, other, extinct.

It sounds very smart
Revisado: 02-05-20
If you like how Brits talk, and you listen to NPR, you’ll dig how this sounds. Lots of big words, frothy British banter, and a podcast-style delivery that will appeal to the elitist acadamian inside us all that that knows they are better than other people.
The only reason this was slightly tolerable is because a professor from England read it. Otherwise, just a lot of random facts.
And paleontologists repeatedly saying things like “I just always loved to play in the sand, and look where I am now!”

GOOD BOOK, HORRIBLE NARRATION
Revisado: 10-12-18
The book is OK, and the characters are easy to fault in step with. Overall, it is a good read.
But with an audio book, the one thing that can kill a great story is a bad narrator. This narrator is hum-drum, completely uninteresting. And when he tries to do any kind of accent, it is terrible. He needs to find work reading instruction manuals.
