May be true history but was disappointed
Revisado: 07-02-24
Eleanor Roosevelt may have had physical attractions and/or relationship with her female friend, Hick, but I wish the description would have included that tidbit of information to prepare the listener. I chose to not finish the book based on that alone. The narrators are wonderful and one reason I took the leap for this book since I was unfamiliar with these authors.

Couldn’t finish
Revisado: 01-12-23
I couldn’t finish for 2 reasons. The narrator reads well, but with too much vibrance in her voice to be narrating a story about the Underground Railroad and the secrecy associated with the responsibility of transporting slaves. The story characters speak with the runaway slaves and other UR members with too much familiarity and without encryption associated with the UR.
Not a bad story, but just not authentic as the historical situation called for.

The Beauty of a True Mother’s Love
Revisado: 06-10-18
I’m reminded of the Mothers in the Bible who selflessly gave of their sons....
I was skeptical of a male narrator and held off purchasing this Julie Klassen book. Even after the purchase I questioned my decision; not because of poor narration, but I struggle with male voices in female dominate stories. Mr Prebble does a fantastic job. I thoroughly enjoyed all elements of this story and consider it as excellent as the rest of Ms Klassen’s stories!

Why we think it’s a great listen: A masterpiece like none other, Brooks’ powerful performance of Haley’s words has been known to leave listeners in tears. It begins with a birth in an African village in 1750, and ends two centuries later at a funeral in Arkansas. And in that time span, an unforgettable cast of men, women, and children come to life, many of them based on the people from Alex Haley's own family tree.

Historia
In the city of Chicago in 1892, the rules for Victorian women are strict, their roles limited. But sisters Rebecca and Flora Hawes are not typical Victorian ladies. Their love of adventure and their desire to use their God-given talents has brought them to the Sinai Desert - and into a sandstorm. Accompanied by Soren Petersen, their somber young butler, and Kate Rafferty, a street urchin who is learning to be their ladies' maid, the two women are on a quest to find an important biblical manuscript.

I love everything Lynn Austin. The story line was great. BUT the narrator was all wrong. I’d like to hear it again with a different voice to make a comparison.

PRETENTIOUS BUSY-BODIES WITH ONE LONE DIAMOND
Revisado: 04-03-17
If you could sum up Wives and Daughters in three words, what would they be?
Mixed Feelings Galore....
Who was your favorite character and why?
Molly - She was constant in everything and everywhere with everyone regardless of the pretentious busy-body women and near-sighted men in her life. Her gentle nature made her think more positive of others and be kind-hearted to those who tried to belittle and oppress her.
What does Prunella Scales bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Her patience and accent. In the first 1/3 to 1/2 of the book I would have become impatient because the story seemed to be going no where but full of mundane descriptions of unimportant backdrops.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I didn't cry. I did laugh, but I also had frustration with the Hyacinth. She was condescending to Molly, but she masked her condescension in the choice of her words. The narrator also helped mask the condescension by the tone of her voice while reading, which is probably a good thing because then I would have been really irritated. I DO NOT like when others are put down and stepped on. I appreciated that Molly could stand up for herself for the most part and speak up to her defense.
Any additional comments?
The fact that the story isn't completed by the author due to her untimely death left me wanting a definite end to the story, but it was nice to be left to the imagination also!
