Author just argued why play is beneficial but then provides common sense reasonings with some low level evidence sprinkled in here and there that play actually does what he says it does. there is no "wow I didn't know that" moments or "I want to give that a try".

This was a great memoir and I wholeheartedly disagree with the negative reviews. First of all, this is a memoir of how a woman strived to apply her parent's immigrant parenting style - where it worked, where it didn't work, where she was able to stick to this plan, where she failed and gave in to local parenting norms, to her husband's family parenting style, or just to the empathy she felt towards her daughters. I read, even in the positive reviews, that this is not a how-to, but if you want to learn some pointers you can pick up her general approach and mindset with a few specific examples of how she handled her two daughters - one of which was very resistant and the other who was less. Overall, she found a good balance and even where she waned off of her strict parenting style, she still produced some highly strong-willed children. Both my wife and I agreed that we would have appreciated being pushed by our parents when we were younger now that we see how successful others became with that level of high expectations placed on them. It's enough to inspire me to take a hard approach with my soon-to-be child but with the understanding of where I can and should pick my battles. After all, smart people learn from their mistakes; geniuses learn from the mistakes of others.

Rambles about why and provides nothing in the how. we all understand the why. Also he, time and time again, references the conman Gary V. If it was done in terms of understanding Gary V in that context it would be fine, but it's done in a way where one might think Gary was some sort of intelligent thought leader worth taking advice from on life and business decisions.

I was worried after people said there were no practical points. There are plenty of points. The author sometimes spells out willpower hacks and other times just covers the principle allowing you to decide how you could do something. For example, he tells you people who focused on fixing posture strengthened their willpower over other domains. Okay great I know I can use that exercise or think of my own willpower exercise by monitoring myself.

This book teaches you nothing. Instead it goes on and on about useless stuff like speaking up, believing in yourself and your idea, etc. Nothing of substance.

Provides the most basic of information that I would deem it a notch below common sense. There is absolutely no evidence-based info on what works and what doesn't. No gold nuggets. There isn't even any thought given to writing something palatable. For example, the word "brand" is repeated after every word for an entire chapter until you are dizzy from hearing it and the next chapter its the word "consistency". However, the narrator is clear and pleasant to listen to.

This may have gold nuggets in there but I couldn't finish it. Ironically she is a terrible storyteller. She takes so long getting to her points that it feels like pointless rambling. Even a 1.5x it was just unbearably difficult to listen to.

Wow, I don't believe the positive reviews. What a joke. I learned nothing from this book. Lots of talk about life goals and passions. If you have heard of porter's 5 forces or business canvas or ANY other topic related to opening a business this will sound like it was made for a 6-year-old.

Interesting take on investment strategy. Counterintuitive to the 401k monthly dollar-cost averaging into index stocks you hear.

I don't think this author knows what he is talking about. Go read "Lessons in Corporate Finance: A Case Studies Approach to Financial Tools, Financial Policies, and Valuation " by Asquith and Weiss if you want to learn how finance really works. Watch Ben Felix on youtube if you want to learn about investments. The Great Courses also has some great material on how to invest. Peter Lynch has an interesting take of his own. But no investment book or strategy will mean anything if you don't trust the system and think stocks are a Ponzi scheme. It might help to learn what they truly are and how they really work, which is why I would start with Lessons of Corporate Finance. If you are still skeptical learning basic economics and corporate law might help too. If you are skeptical after that then well, more power to you.
