Historia
Mariel Prager needs a break. Her husband Ned is having an identity crisis, her spunky, beloved restaurant is bleeding money by the day, and her mother Florence is stubbornly refusing to leave the church where she’s been holed up for more than a week. The Lakeside Supper Club has been in her family for decades, and while Mariel’s grandmother embraced the business, seeing it as a saving grace, Florence never took to it. When Mariel inherited the restaurant, skipping Florence, it created a rift between mother and daughter that never quite healed.

Disappointing
Revisado: 06-11-23
I loved this author’s previous books, but didn’t care much for this one. It was hard to keep track of the characters. The way it skipped around was confusing. And the performance!!! One of the greatest things about this author is how well he understands his Midwestern settings. The person who recorded the book obviously doesn’t know much about the Upper Midwest. I cringed every time she said “Ed-deen-a” instead of Ed-dye-na” for Edina and “Lu-cee-a’s” rather than “Lu-sha’s” for Lucia’s. Do your homework, Audiobooks.

Historia
Based on the extraordinary life of National Book Award-winning author Louise Erdrich’s grandfather who worked as a night watchman and carried the fight against Native dispossession from rural North Dakota all the way to Washington, DC, this powerful novel explores themes of love and death with lightness and gravity and unfolds with the elegant prose, sly humor, and depth of feeling of a master craftsman.

Terrific!

In my opinion, this is one of Louise Erdrich's finest books. Vivid characters, great story, important issues. I was really sad to reach the end of this book.

Historia
Antonia Vega, the immigrant writer at the center of Afterlife, has had the rug pulled out from under her. She has just retired from the college where she taught English when her beloved husband, Sam, suddenly dies. And then more jolts: her bighearted but unstable sister disappears, and Antonia returns home one evening to find a pregnant, undocumented teenager on her doorstep.

Good enough
Revisado: 09-01-20
A well-written story, but not overwhelmingly good. Descriptions of the central character's widowhood are moving. But the resolution of the story is pretty trite.

Historia
Agnes is a wild creature who walks her family’s land with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer, understanding plants and potions better than she does people. Once she settles with her husband on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband, whose career on the London stage is taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to sudden fever.

Wonderful!
Revisado: 09-01-20
Maggie O'Farrell's writing is beautiful -- a pleasure to read. And the story is engaging. I really cared about the characters. The book reminds me of Hilary Mantel's work, in that it paints a vivid picture of everyday life in Tudor times. I would highly recommend this book.

Historia
Ray Midge is waiting for his credit card bill to arrive. His wife, Norma, has run off with her ex-husband, taking Ray’s cards, shotgun, and car. But from the receipts, Ray can track where they’ve gone. He takes off after them, as does an irritatingly tenacious bail bondsman, both following the romantic couple’s spending as far as Mexico.

An amusing tale that goes nowhere
Revisado: 09-01-20
I loved the character who narrates this tale. What an entertaining spinner of yarns! The language is delightful -- colorful and distinctive. And the reader does a great job of bringing it to life. I got a bit frustrated with the story after a while, though. The characters are so ridiculous that it's impossible to care about what happens to them. So, I guess I would say that this is an amusing picaresque novel without a lot of staying power.

Historia
Members of the cosmopolitan, cultural aristocracy of Florence at the beginning of the 20th century, the Rosselli family, led by their fierce matriarch, Amelia, were vocal antifascists. As populist right-wing nationalism swept across Europe after World War I and Italy's prime minister, Benito Mussolini, began consolidating his power, Amelia's sons, Carlo and Nello, led the opposition, taking a public stand against Il Duce that few others in their elite class dared risk.

Tedious!
Revisado: 09-01-20
It's clear that the author researched this story thoroughly. But did she have to throw in every single smidgen of information that she uncovered? I expected this book to be somewhat exciting. Wouldn't a tale of "A Bold and Dangerous Family" be packed with action and intrigue? But no, the book was B-O-R-I-N-G! Way too much extraneous detail! And the narrator's delivery made it all the more boring. Life is too short to bother finishing this book.
