A Book For Our Troubled Times
Revisado: 12-02-23
The author provides the history & background of where we came from & how we have once again been side lined (from the damage during Reagan’s presidency) who set the stage for authoritarians like Trump and his enablers who have put their own interests and power ahead of what is good for ALL AMERICANS. I hope they fail!

Hitler's invasion of Russia brought to an end a period of almost exactly a year during which Britain and her Empire had stood alone. Six months later, the United States, attacked by Japan, joined the war and the Grand Alliance was born.

The author describes the countless ways in which the Japanese met the challenge of "starting over", from top-level manipulations concerning the fate of Emperor Hirohito to the hopes, fears, and activities of ordinary men and women in every walk of life.

Production Note

I have already listened to this book and rated it very high. I forgot to mention one production note. After each section and or chapter there was no pause at the end before the next section. This was irritating and difficult to understand why it was done.

Historia
In his critically acclaimed Armageddon, Hastings detailed the last twelve months of the struggle for Germany. Here, in what can be considered a companion volume, he covers the horrific story of the war against Japan. By the summer of 1944 it was clear that Japan’s defeat was inevitable, but how the drive to victory would be achieved remained to be seen. The ensuing drama–that ended in Japan’s utter devastation–was acted out across the vast stage of Asia.

A Must Read!
Revisado: 07-25-16
If you could sum up Retribution in three words, what would they be?
Illuminating, Clear, Inspiring
What other book might you compare Retribution to and why?
As we go further away from the Pacific War - now about 70 plus years - new works are coming out all the time. Because of that, it is hard to find comparisons to this work.
Which character – as performed by Simon Vance – was your favorite?
None really stand out in my mind although, when I first heard Mr Vance go into character, I was both surprised and delighted.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Chapter 19 and its crystal clear summary of the events that lead to the dropping of the atomic bomb. There are so many wild and whacky revisions swirling around the decision to drop the bombs and Mr Hastings’ work confidently deals with these theories with his use of historical records and facts and puts emotional opinions aside. He does what good historians do, and that is getting inside the heads of the decision makers of the period bases on primary sources. I recommend his whole work, but if you can only read one chapter, that chapter should not be missed.
Any additional comments?
Mr Vance’s Japanese pronunciation was not perfect and at times it was irritating but overall was better then some of the other readers I have come across.
I recommend this book to everyone who wants to have a ride into and through the period and the huge events that still echo in the country I have called home for over forty years… Japan!

Historia
The devastation of Pearl Harbor and the American victory at Midway were prelude to a greater challenge: rolling back the vast Japanese Pacific empire island by island. This masterful history encompasses the heart of the Pacific War - the period between mid-1942 and mid-1944 - when parallel Allied counteroffensives north and south of the equator washed over Japan's far-flung island empire like a "conquering tide", concluding with Japan's irreversible strategic defeat in the Marianas.

Essential Reading
Revisado: 07-25-16
The second of three in Toll’s trilogy of the Pacific War is essential reading. Well documented, well written, and just excellent history!
The audio, however, not as good. The narration overall is wooden but more disturbing is the narator’s pronunciation of Japanese that is far too often horrendous. Also, why is it that the chapters in the audio version have no relation to the chapters in the book? The audio version has 20 chapters, and the book has 14, making it a arduous task to listen, then go to the book for some reading and trying to find where I had left off. This makes the experience very irritating and time consuming!

Historia
On the first Sunday in December 1941, an armada of Japanese warplanes appeared suddenly over Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and devastated the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Six months later, in a sea fight north of the tiny atoll of Midway, four Japanese aircraft carriers were sent into the abyss. Pacific Crucible tells the epic tale of these first searing months of the Pacific war, when the U.S. Navy shook off the worst defeat in American military history and seized the strategic initiative.

This book is a gem full of details about the Pacific war. Understanding of Japanese side and way of thinking very good.
Narrator very good but pronunciation of Japanese place names and people not 100% but was only a minor distraction.
