Jack Kernigan is having a bad day...a bad year...a bad life. After being booted out of MIT, he’s back in his Ohio hometown, working for the family business, facing a life of mediocrity. Then one day, out on a delivery, his truck hits...something. Something big...something furry...something invisible. And, it turns out, something not of this Earth. Fate can play funny tricks. Which is why Jack suddenly finds himself the planet’s best hope to unravel a conspiracy of galactic proportions that could spell the end of the human race.

so disappointing
Revisado: 08-25-23
Fan of the writer and narrator but this book feels very much like someone else's story. Skippy, er uh Sheldon was weak, story was weak, all characters were weak. weak as in I could neither believe in them or cared for them. Plus, yes. we get it. Your word processor has a built in thesaurus. No need to actually use it so the only people that understand the words have a dictionary handy or a Graduate Degree in linguistics. As a rarity, I find myself very angry at this time waste of an embarrassment.

Historia
In this essential new book, self-protection expert and former military intelligence officer Tim Larkin changes the way we think about violence in order to save our lives. By deconstructing our assumptions about violence - its morality, its function in modern society, how it actually works - Larkin unlocks the shackles of our own taboos and arms us with what we need to know to prevent, prepare for, and survive the unthinkable event of life-or-death violence.

Good info but narration is not good
Revisado: 03-01-23
I have spent a great deal of life learning and appreciating the art of violence. There are many good points in this book, thus I can say, I recommend reading it. It teaches about the mindset and situational awareness that many people lack. It also falls back on some general guidance for self defense. Please understand, no book at all can teach you self defense. NONE. You will never know what it is like to get punched in the face until you get punched in the face. You will never know what it feels like to be choked or kicked until it happens. That is when words fail and only experience works. That being said, if you can not learn to shut off the part of your brain that is merciful, you will not do well in any violent encounter and that is where the book teaching comes in. The author stresses well that when violence is the only answer, you must be prepared to be as absolutely violent as you can be. Mercy isnt for the weak, it is for the dead. When someone wants to harm you to the point that words will no longer work, 'be the bullet'. Kudos for the teaching and sharing of experience. Worth the listen. The narration is pretty rough though. Professional narrators are professional for a reason. The author tries to read his own words but it falls frustratingly short on many occasions. Push past and consume the message.

In the days of yore, he flew the skies and scorched angry mobs - now he hides from swamp tour boats and rises only with the greatest reluctance from his La-Z-Boy recliner. Laying low in the bayou, this once-magnificent fire breather has been reduced to lighting Marlboros with nose sparks, swilling Absolut in a Flashdance T-shirt, and binging Netflix in a fishing shack. For centuries, he struck fear in hearts far and wide as Wyvern, Lord Highfire of the Highfire Eyrie - now he goes by Vern.

not for me
Revisado: 02-23-23
First of all, I do not mind cursing. It doesn't offend me at all. But wow, when GD is tossed about twenty to thirty times in a conversation it just makes the characters sound stupid. The story itself is not something I would ever want to read every again. Sequel or original . Just not good. I forced myself to finish it because I wanted to give a fair review. The characters were unlikable and the villain is too cartoonish as is the dragon. I can't stress enough how much I hated this story in every way. Just terrible.

re-hash
Revisado: 02-23-23
If you are new to the world of religion, lack of religion or somewhere in between this is a fine overview of things to consider. If you have background or knowledge at all of anything mentioned above, look elsewhere. It is very basic and narration is slow. This will not answer any questions for you, it will not point you in any direction aside from basic arguments against religion. Free info on the internet would be much more beneficial.

Historia
“The Heron” is the nickname a big-city accountant has attached to himself in his new home near San Diego, where he’s using the alias to avoid a hit man who may be after him. It seems a former client believes that The Heron has skipped town with several million dollars not his own. Don Winslow’s ensuing, entertaining yarn is by turns twisty, dark, and comical as we observe the delicate dance between the pursuer and the pursued.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Welcome to your nightmare
Revisado: 12-07-22
Kudos for writing a book about your life. Everyone has issues and everyone has baggage. Being famous does not put you to the front of the line when it comes to venting. Or at least it shouldn't. The content of this book is somewhat troubling and shocking but in reality we all deal with things from our childhood. I get that her mother is a loon and created a situation that no one should have to deal with. I am sure many hollywood types have similar stories as do many people in general. . The narration of this book is absolutely terrible in every way. it drags on and on without feelings aside from self loathing. I finished the book but wow was it difficult. I really dont understand the reviews and why it became popular aside from a few situations that are disturbing. Not in a good way disturbing either. She really needs long term help and this feels exploitative in many ways. Left me feeling gross and dirty and sad for her. Even sadder for me for having tolerated the drivel. Again, if it was narrated by someone else the story might have been more touching but she really does ruin her own story by the terrible narration. Someone should have told her and been honest.

Performance was fine but the content was a splattering of thoughts with little completion. Like a stream that doesnt converge into a river. Just kind of floats along with no real points. All the stories just kind of hang in space.

It is an ok story but it feels like the writer got tired and lost somewhere along the way and skipped some fairly important details that could wrap the story better. it was free and short so if you want to waste some time it's worth it..sorta.
