Historia
Years before the name Alex Murdaugh was splashed across every major media outlet in America, local South Carolina journalist Mandy Matney had an instinct that something wasn’t right in the Lowcountry. The powerful Murdaugh dynasty had dominated rural South Carolina for generations. No one dared to cross them.

Wrong title
Revisado: 05-21-24
I would have had no problem if this author titled this Re her path as a journalist. This is not remotely solely a story about the Murdaugh dynasty. The vast majority of this book deals with her personal struggles and journey in becoming a journalist. Just call it what it is. I purchased it to find out more about this case. Spent way too much during the 10 1/2 hours on her personal path and relationships. And she often slams fellow journalists while taking sole credit for bringing national attention to this case. Also, slams criticisms of her narration as sexist. Narration of audio books/podcasts is part of the experience. Her voice is sub par and, although she cannot help it, her lisp is distracting. This is not sexist, all audio books are judged on narration as well as content. Get over yourself.

Historia
Kenan Thompson is Saturday Night Live’s longest-ever-serving cast member and a star of such pioneering sketches as “Black Jeopardy” and is hugely beloved thanks to a tidal wave of nostalgic fans who grew up on early 2000s classics All That, Good Burger, and Kenan & Kel on Nickelodeon. He’s also a dad (to two girls) in his mid-40s living in suburbia, and whose universal, relatable, family-friendly humor has created unbelievable appeal and engagement from fans from middle America to coastal elites. Becoming a dad sucked the cool right out of him—and he's OK with that!

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Buckle in
Revisado: 07-14-23
Yes it is very long. That being said, you need to give it time and patience to develop.
When I saw the narrator was the author, this was a huge red flag for me as narration is its own skill and I usually only enjoy author narration for an autobiography. However, I really enjoyed Verghese’s narration and thought he was able to delineate among the many characters quite well.
Beautifully written, multilayered book. Wholeheartedly recommend.

Apparently I’m in the minority
Revisado: 04-21-23
I must have received a different book. I ordered this due to the mostly positive reviews. The narration was fine but the story was all over the place. Too many characters, unnecessary tangents and overall just boring and slow moving. I stuck with it way too long and got to an hour from the end and just stopped. Truly didn’t care what would happen next. I have over a thousand audible books and this is the first time that happened.

Annoying narration
Revisado: 12-09-22
I usually really enjoy autobiographical books narrated by the author. It adds such dimension to a personal story. However, Priscilla’s frequent, cringeworthy giggling felt very forced and distracting. Not sure if she was directed to do so, but it detracted from the story. And her little girl inflection, appropriate during her teen years, sounded odd coming from a senior citizen. Not to heap more on this review, but her discussion about intentionally gaining as little weight as possible during her pregnancy, without any hindsight comment about that, was particularly disturbing.

19 hours to go and I’m not ready to give up, but- love this series, very excited to roll from Troubled Blood right into this one. BUT agree with other reviews that the chat room readings are tedious at best. Story grinds to a halt. I got a bit more used to them as the book went on, but my overall experience is very different than the previous books in this series. Terrific narration as always, and well developed characters. Probably plow through. I wonder if author agrees that this one is best read, not listened to.

Historia
Shortly after 9.30 in the morning, a young man walks into Surf City, Bondi’s newest shopping complex. He’s wearing a dark grey hoodie - and a bomb around his neck. Just a few minutes later, he is locked in a shop on the upper floor. And trapped with him are four innocent bystanders. For police chaplain Paul Doherty, called to the scene by Senior Sergeant Boehm, it’s a story that will end as tragically as it began. For this is clearly no ordinary siege. The boy, known as Ali Khan, seems as frightened as his hostages and has yet to utter a single word.

Revisado: 02-12-22
Bought this deal of the day based on the reviews. I’m embarrassed to say I finished it, but I just kept waiting for it to get better. Confusing listen, sophomoric, cringey dialogue and silly ending. The only likable character was poor Harry. And what ever became of the bad guys? Felt like the author got bored with this at the end, too, and decided she’d also had enough.
