Historia
This remarkably immediate memoir tells of the U.S Army's essential role in the Pacific campaigns alongside the Navy and Marine Corps. America's sons, born in the first quarter of the 20th century, were forged in the twin crucibles of the Great Depression and World War II. The values and attitudes of these mostly idealistic young males ultimately sustained them in horrific trials against incredibly courageous, and often suicidally-committed, Japanese soldiers blindly loyal to their superior officers and the Emperor.

Where does Through These Portals rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
One of the very best. Number two on my favorite list just behind The Wrong Stuff.
What other book might you compare Through These Portals to and why?
Never read a book like this so really can't compare.
Which character – as performed by James Killavey – was your favorite?
This was not a book of fiction so...the author, I guess. Reader did an excellent job. I got this book because I enjoyed his narration of The Wrong Stuff so much.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There were a lot of them. Those were incredibly brave young men.
Any additional comments?
Was a wonderful and educational listening experience.

Historia
Between April and July 1944, Truman Smith flew 35 bombing missions over France and Germany. He was only 20 years old. Although barely adults, Smith and his peers worried about cramming a lifetime's worth of experience into every free night, each knowing he probably would not survive the next bombing mission. Written with blunt honesty, wry humor, and insight, The Wrong Stuff is Smith's gripping memoir of that time.

The Wrong Stuff is GOOD stuff
Revisado: 03-27-15
If you could sum up The Wrong Stuff in three words, what would they be?
A terrific listen
Who was your favorite character and why?
Truman Smith, of course
What does James Killavey bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Did a very good job. Enough emotion, when needed, but without going "over the top." Let the book tell the story didn't try to act it out. I like that style.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
The Wrong Stuff
Any additional comments?
I've listened to many audio books over the years. This one ranks right up there at the top.

Historia
This audiobook challenges several longstanding notions about the American way of war. It examines US military practice (strategic and operational) from the War of Independence to the campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan to determine what patterns, if any, existed in the way Americans have used military force. Echevarria surveys all major US wars and most every small conflict in the country's military history.

Excellent overview of complex subject
Revisado: 11-25-14
If you could sum up Reconsidering the American Way of War in three words, what would they be?
That is really impossible..complex stuff cannot be summed up in three words.
What did you like best about this story?
Great a great overall view of the topic with many specific examples.
Which scene was your favorite?
No "scenes" in this non-fiction work.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Noo....Has to be taken in small doses. There is a lot to digest.
Any additional comments?
Reader did a good job on what must have been a very difficult task. For military officers, this is a must read...or listen.. so that past mistakes are not made all over again.

Good story
Revisado: 12-18-09
I don't know if I would call this story "awe-inspiring" as another listener did but it was certainly a very good story. I thought the reader was quite good as well. Five stars, overall.

Lester del Rey is one of the best sci-fi writers and this little gem of a novel is a good example of his work.
Involving, exciting and with a not so subtle message about the price of victory. Reader was excellent as well.
