Historia
A coming-of-age tale for the young and naïve 17-year-old Catherine Morland, Northanger Abbey takes a decidedly comical look at themes of class, family, love and literature. Revelling in the sensationalist - and extremely popular - Gothic fiction of her day, the story follows Catherine out of Bath to the lofty manor of the Tilneys, where her overactive imagination gets to work constructing an absurd and melodramatic explanation for the death of Mrs Tilney, which threatens to jeopardise her newly forged friendships.

Delightful

Worth a listen even if just for the part played by the fabulous Emma Thompson.

Intriguing story but too drawn out
Revisado: 07-01-20
I bought this title as a sci-fi first contact novel, but it took almost halfway through before there was more than just vague hinting at an alien presence. Sometimes there could be 10 minutes of explaining how the main character made a decision whether to enter a cave, and it drove me crazy. I dozed off through some of it and don’t think I missed anything of consequence. That said, I’m glad I listened to it, a very unique story.

Ben Winters is always original
Revisado: 05-24-20
I love Ben Winters as an author. He has a very original mind. These are 3 fun short stories that riff on social isolating during the 2020 pandemic. Amazing that he and Audible could get this put together so quickly after the pandemic started.

Historia
In 1912, scientist Marie Curie spent two months on the British seaside at the home of Hertha Ayrton, an accomplished mathematician, inventor, and suffragette. At the time, Curie was in the throes of a scandal in France over her affair with Paul Langevin, which threatened to overshadow the accomplishment of her second Nobel Prize. Performed by Kate Mulgrew and Francesca Faridany at the Minetta Lane Theatre, this play by Lauren Gunderson is an ode to two remarkable women.

Beautiful and touching drama
Revisado: 12-07-19
This is one of the loveliest programs I have ever heard on Audible. The story is interesting on many levels, personal drama, politics of the times, scientific discovery, feminism. The performances are beautiful and couldn’t be better.

Historia
In The Lightkeepers, we follow Miranda, a nature photographer who travels to the Farallon Islands, an exotic and dangerous archipelago off the coast of California, for a one-year residency capturing the landscape. Her only companions are the scientists studying there, odd and quirky refugees from the mainland living in rustic conditions; they document the fish populations around the island, the bold trio of sharks called the Sisters that hunt the surrounding waters, and the overwhelming bird population....

Intriguing and unusual
Revisado: 10-08-16
Wild nature, isolation, and troubling events on a desolate island occupied by biologists and the main character, a photographer. Seals, sea lions, whales, gulls, and an octopus are as much characters in the book as the humans. I really enjoyed this. The narration is very spare and simple, but it suits this book, I think.

Lovely story, but . . . .
Revisado: 09-02-16
I enjoyed this story very much. The narrator was excellent, and the story of a young woman being told through the eyes of her elderly lawyer/friend, based on their written correspondence, was fresh and original. However, I cringed frequently at the racist references to non-whites. The time period was British empire during and after WWII. That doesn't excuse the racism, but may explain it

Wonderful story
Revisado: 07-08-15
I loved everything about this book except the main character's relationship with her father. (If she hated being associated with him so much, all she had to do was change her surname. ) Other than that, I though this was a fascinating story, multilayered which is something I always enjoy. I learned about Chinese history and culture, archeology, Teilhard De Chardin, and got to enjoy a good tale about how messy, difficult, and challenging life is, yet with hope.

Historia
Here is a short, sleek novel of encounters, set in Tokyo during the witching hours between midnight and dawn, and every bit as gripping as Haruki Murakami's masterworks The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and Kafka on the Shore. At its center are two sisters: Eri, a fashion model slumbering her way into oblivion, and Mari, a young student soon led from solitary reading at an anonymous Denny's toward people whose lives are radically different from her own.

Very enjoyable, but loose ends
Revisado: 08-30-07
I'm a Haruki fan, enjoyed this because of the usual juxtaposition of the ordinary and the surreal, the wonderful use of language. BUT just when I felt that I was getting to know and love the characters, the book ended. It needs a sequel.
