Historia
Awakening from the Trance of Self-Centeredness - At the core of our suffering is our universal human predicament: an illusion that we are a separate self. This talk explores how this identification as a self obscures our belonging to loving awareness, and offers a powerful set of practices that shine a light on self-centeredness and relaxes its grip.

Historia
Blackwater is the saga of a small town, Perdido, Alabama, and Elinor Dammert, the stranger who arrives there under mysterious circumstances on Easter Sunday, 1919. On the surface, Elinor is gracious, charming, anxious to belong in Perdido, and eager to marry Oscar Caskey, the eldest son of Perdido's first family. But her beautiful exterior hides a shocking secret. Beneath the waters of the Perdido River, she turns into something terrifying, a creature whispered about in stories that have chilled the residents of Perdido for generations.

OK Story, EXCELLENT Narration
Revisado: 04-23-21
I have never been so impressed with a narrator as I am by Matt Godfrey. Narration can make or break an audio book. I’ve been let down many times. The only issue I had with this one was the speed. Godfrey spoke just a bit too quickly for me, but Audible’s speed control fixed that perfectly.
The story is just OK. It’s slow with moments of “page-turning” drama or mystery sprinkled here and there. It has a lot of characters and does well developing them. I wish some of the fantasy aspects of the book were better explained; I also wish it wasn’t gross river stuff. (I can’t get too specific without spoilers.)
Come for the story but stay for the narration.

Historia
For untold years, the perfectly preserved mummy had lain forgotten in the dusty basement of Boston’s Crispin Museum. Now its sudden rediscovery by museum staff is both a major coup and an attention-grabbing mystery. Dubbed “Madam X,” the mummy–to all appearances, an ancient Egyptian artifact–seems a ghoulish godsend for the financially struggling institution. But medical examiner Maura Isles soon discovers a macabre message hidden within the corpse–horrifying proof that this “centuries-old” relic is instead a modern-day murder victim.

Basic and Predictable
Revisado: 03-22-21
The story was basic and predictable. The narration took me out of the story. Certain characters’ voices sounded just silly.

Tara is awesome!
Revisado: 10-01-20
Lots of loving guidance. This book made me a Tara Brach fan, which then led me to her podcasts; they’re excellent, like the book. I highly appreciate her tone/style of speaking. She’s approachable, down to earth, humble, and there’s no ego behind her message.

Historia
Leland Gaunt opens a new shop in Castle Rock called Needful Things. Anyone who enters his store finds the object of his or her lifelong dreams and desires: a prized baseball card, a healing amulet. In addition to a token payment, Gaunt requests that each person perform a little "deed", usually a seemingly innocent prank played on someone else from town. These practical jokes cascade out of control, and soon the entire town is doing battle with itself. Only Sheriff Alan Pangborn suspects that Gaunt is behind the population's increasingly violent behavior.

Good, but hard to keep track of characters
Revisado: 10-09-18
I enjoyed the book overall although I had trouble keeping track of the characters. It was suspenseful, but like most of King’s books I’ve read, the ending was underwhelming. However, I did enjoy the journey. 😊

Historia
Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first Lo's stay is nothing but pleasant: The cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, and gray skies fall.

Annoying main character and weak narrator
Revisado: 08-23-18
I really struggled with the main character because of her lack of logic and dumb decisions. I understand she had PTSD from a recent traumatic experience, but apparently I still couldn’t stand her stupidity. Also, I wasn’t a fan of the narrator’s voice for the male characters, even some female characters with foreign accents.

Great Narration
Revisado: 08-23-18
A narrator plays a huge part in a listener’s audio book experience. This narrator was great. Especially his cadence when speaking the thoughts of the main character when he was first recovering from his accident and struggling to find the right words.
