Historia
Colonial politics in Kyauktada, India, in the 1920s, come to a head when the European Club, previously for whites only, is ordered to elect one token native member. The deeply racist members do their best to manipulate the situation, resulting in the loss not only of reputations but of lives. Amid this cynical setting, timber merchant James Flory, a Brit with a genuine appreciation for the native people and culture, stands as a bridge between the warring factions. But he has trouble acting on his feelings, and the significance of his vote, both social and political, weighs on him.

Amazing narrator.
Revisado: 09-17-18
It’s a story of the end of the British colonial days in Burma, with the white skinned overlords ruling over the dark skinned native savages. Meanwhile the protagonist is trying to get a woman to marry him. I enjoyed it, thanks to the amazing narrator...

Historia
Founded by Alexander the Great and built by self-styled Greek pharaohs, the city of Alexandria at its height dwarfed both Athens and Rome. It was the marvel of its age, legendary for its vast palaces, safe harbors, and magnificent lighthouse. But it was most famous for the astonishing intellectual efflorescence it fostered and the library it produced. If the European Renaissance was the "rebirth" of Western culture, then Alexandria, Egypt, was its birthplace.

Very Interesting Glimpse into a Forgotten Past
Revisado: 08-31-18
How smart were people over 2000 years ago? Pretty effing smart. I found this to be a super interesting audiobook with a great narrator who helped bring the ancient world to life. We had all this knowledge that was lost and rediscovered hundreds of years later.
It gets a bit dull towards the end, dealing with Christian mystical philosophy, but that is part of the story. I loved the stories about measuring the earth with a sundial and ancient computers!

Historia
The Illuminati, an inside joke? The lunatic fringe? Or a vast conspiracy hidden for centuries, unleashing it's power on a naive, defenseless world? It was the lousy luck of Saul Goodman, a tough, streetwise New York detective, to smell the trail in a bombed-out office - the heavy case he'd always dreaded. In a breakneck race against an awesome deadline, Goodman plunges down the trail of the ultimate conspiracy as the days fall away toward Apocalypse.

Entertaining, Thought Provoking
Revisado: 10-28-17
Contains sexually explicit scenes, occasionally racist, sexist, homophobic language at times...It was written in the 1970's by counterculture hippie journalists from Playboy magazine, so it has a Hunter S. Thompson vibe to it. If you like Fight Club, you'll like this. I liked it a lot. It was really smart, creative, funny, and thought provoking. It seems like a historical biography at times, but I'm sure most of it is made up. But what is reality anyway?

Thought Provoking
Revisado: 10-25-16
This would make a great TV mini series. It's not science fiction as much as its a cautionary tale...With a lot of musings on the nation of Ireland being its own worst enemy. The novel is a bit longer than it needed to be, while at the same time some plotlines could've been expanded. I also found the narrating by Scott Brick slow and overly dramatic.
