Review of the entire series, including spinoffs
Revisado: 03-27-22
The following is based on the chronology of the Age of the Solar Clipper
There is a prequel titled Dark Knight Station. It introduces some characters that are main supporting caste throughout.
I don't know that I would actually read this first. It fills out the background on some good guys and a major villian that shows up later.
The main series starts with this title and introduces two of the main characters. This is not a military space opera series but I enjoyed it immensely despite that.
The following books include Half Share, Full Share, Double Share, Captains Share, and Owners Share. They all track the career advancement of the main character Ishmael Horatio Wong.
This is where the chronology goes a bit strange.
A spinoff trilogy that starts with Milk Run introduces a separate story line with a different two main characters. All of the events occur between Double Share and Captains Share in the main series.
The second spinoff trilogy that starts with In Ashes Born follows immediate after Owner's share in the main series. This is where the two main characters from Quarterr Share join back up and the final book in the this trilogy does a nice job of rolling in the two main characters from the other trilogy in the final book.
I did have an initial problem with Milk Run. When I first listened to Milk Run, I quit after the first couple of chapters. This was in part because the narrator doesn't lend herself well to a 1.1 speed setting. The other problem was that I found the start to be a bit stupid. Once I decided to give it another shot and got through the first five (short) chapters, the story got really good.
I've listened to all of these books many many times and know I will enjoy them many more. The one caveat is that I skip to chapter six on Milk Run now that I've read the setup for the story once.

Quitting her job as a high school science teacher to join the Seattle Police Department was an easy decision for Tracy Crosswhite. Years earlier, what should have been one of the happiest days of her life instead became her worst nightmare when her younger sister, Sarah, disappeared. After the murder trial, while her family disintegrated, Tracy turned her heartbreak and her lingering questions into a passion for justice.

Not all that realistic but That’s why it’s called fiction. However, I have encountered men that would fit the bad guy’s role well enough

They were the chosen ones - and the ones who chose to be the best. Never before had the United States given so select a group of fighting men such punishing preparation. Now they were heading for their ultimate test of skill and nerve and sacrifice, in a war unlike any they or their country had ever fought before, in a land that most of America still knew nothing about - Vietnam...

As good as the rest of the series

One of the things I enjoy about the author’s series is how he changes the history of his characters from book to book. He doesn’t disappoint with this one either. That said, it is a really good ‘read’.

About the narrator
Revisado: 03-02-17
There is a lot of criticism of the narrator. I'll grant that she is more of a reader than a performer. I don't mind this at all. I've listened to the entire series and enjoyed them all, even though there were times where I wondered if I was listening to a Nora Roberts in space novel.
At the beginning of the first book, I could see why some people complained about her. However, I decided that her enunciation had more to do with having a regional accent. I have trouble with how females sound that are from Minnesota for example until I listen to them awhile.
Actually, her enunciation is very clear and she is way above average in pronouncing words correctly.
As for the author, she uses shift where I would use watch, and office where I would use day cabin, etc. So if these are the kinds of details you can't get past, you might pass on it.
It also requires a bit belief suspension in places in regard to how people would think and act but I find that necessary in real life too.

Not my kind of story

I couldn't identify with the main character at all. Even so, I enjoyed the 1st half of the book.
