Good story
Revisado: 08-18-24
Good plot with excellent performances. I could mostly see where it was going but there were some unexpected twists along the way.

Historia
Mix Cellini (which he pronounces with an S rather than a C) is superstitious about the number 13 and has always felt dogged by ill-luck. In the house where he lives, there are 13 steps down to the landing below his rooms. His landlady lives her life almost exclusively through her library, blind to the neglect and decay around her. However, Mix is obsessed with the life of the notorious John Christie, who lived in the same Notting Hill neighbourhood at 10 Rillington Place.

One of Rendell’s best
Revisado: 05-22-21
I have read most of Ruth Rendell’s books over the years and am now listening to them. I’ve always thought her stand-alone novels were better than the Wexford books and this is one of the best.
This book is about an elderly lady and her “lodger” who both lead interior lives greatly at odds with reality. She pines for the love that got away; he longs for romance with a famous model and contrives to meet her.
It’s a Rendell book so of course there are murders, oddballs, creepy settings, all vividly brought to life and enhanced by the excellent narration of Ric Jerrom. There are no mind-blowing twists or contrived occurrences; everything proceeds about the way you’d expect it to in real life. The fun is in the way the events are interpreted through the faulty prisms of the characters’ minds.

Historia
The story begins in May 1536: Anne Boleyn is dead, decapitated in the space of a heartbeat by a hired French executioner. As her remains are bundled into oblivion, Cromwell breakfasts with the victors. The blacksmith’s son from Putney emerges from the spring’s bloodbath to continue his climb to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry VIII, settles to short-lived happiness with his third queen, Jane Seymour.

Cromwell comes alive
Revisado: 06-01-20
I listened to the first two books in this trilogy and anxiously awaited the third. Put off by some of the reviews of Ben Miles’ narration, I started out reading the book but it was slow going. I decided to go ahead and get the Ben Miles version and I’m glad I did.
Aside from his mispronunciation, or possibly correct pronunciation, of Wroithsley, I found his reading to be excellent. I did hear a little Michael Caine in Cromwell now and then, but Cromwell was not born a posh toff and Miles’ accent was not grating. The voices of each character had sometimes very subtle differences yet I could distinguish between them, an amazing achievement.
The book itself was, of course, masterful. Mantel brings to life a time and place in history and breathes life into the people who lived them.
This recording includes a dialog between Ben Miles and the author, and it was interesting to hear their comments. I highly recommend this recording.

Historia
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Couldn’t get past the narrator
Revisado: 03-05-19
This is an odd and disturbing story, disturbing in that it shows the way rape victims were treated not that long ago and how this served to allow people like this “Demon“ to stay on the streets, happily victimizing more women.
Beyond that, I could not get past the reader. He had a strange, halting cadence to his speech, kind of like the rabbi on Seinfeld. He pronounced every “a” as a long “a,” never “uh,” and almost every “the” as “thee.” It’s probably just me, but this drove me to distraction. Couldn’t finish it.
