A satisfying little listen. Slow burn is the mood. Some truly cute moments. I didn’t see the twist coming. Just a beautifully woven story. So satisfying. Looking forward to the next one.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Badass
Revisado: 02-21-25
I love that the main character struggles so much through her pain and continues to forge her way in such a brutal world. It really is so much fun to root for her. I would have listened through with far fewer breaks if the dialogue were a little better, and if her relationships were a little more natural. I don’t understand why Dane doesn’t have better things to do other than heavy breath in Violets direction? Everything is badass. Everything. Badass all the things. Just. It made me wonder why we don’t like goodass? And how, HOW, through all the pain and fear of death, does she manage to be so lusty for Xanden? I mean, it’s a mess and so cringe, but I still listened. I’m gonna listen to the rest of the books too and the dramatizations as well. It’s a fun story. It’s even fun how ridiculous the dialogue and relationships are. But the best part really is that violet is like “lol I eat pain for breakfast let’s do this perilous ish I don’t give a shit I’ll wrap all my joints bruh bring me the biggest and baddest I ain’t afraid yo”
It just
It’s so much fun.

Totally triggering
Revisado: 11-16-23
If you have a throat thing, there is a rough scene in the last hour of the book. Brilliant book. I am listening to this in November of 2023, and she was not far off in imagining 2021. It’s brilliant and terrifying and disturbing and completely unflinching. This was the hardest one in the series for me personally. And Wild Seed was pretty dark as well. Overall, masterful.

Fun story
Revisado: 07-06-22
It is a fun story. Aurora is likeable, serves as a vessel for exposition, as do all of the characters with their paragraphs of super detailed dialogue, but if you can get over it, it’s really an adorable story. The thing that doesn’t make sense is Aurora’s mother. I don’t understand how she threatened Evie if she ever hurt Aurora, but the people who actually hurt Aurora she never went after? I mean I’m not a shifter but if I was the type of shifter Auroras mother is I don’t think there’s anywhere in the world the people who hurt Aurora could hide. That’s just such a gaping plot hole it makes no sense.
But Evie and Aurora did have a cute relationship. I hate how prejudice they were against the wolves and sharks though. Just. Come on. Why. They are SO casually prejudiced it’s kind of wild.

Historia
Multiverse travel is finally possible, but there’s just one catch: No one can visit a world where their counterpart is still alive. Enter Cara, whose parallel selves happen to be exceptionally good at dying—from disease, turf wars, or vendettas they couldn’t outrun. Cara’s life has been cut short on 372 worlds in total. On this dystopian Earth, however, Cara has survived. Identified as an outlier and therefore a perfect candidate for multiverse travel, Cara is plucked from the dirt of the wastelands.

Revisado: 03-31-22
I love this book. World building is solid. The main character is familiar and relatable. Writing about different worlds and interstellar travel can get annoying and confusing but this was not that. It’s just a really well done story. So satisfying to listen to.

Great performance of an important classic. I was a bad student when this was my assigned reading, as a grown up I appreciate it a lot more. Fantastic reading by the narrator, I definitely want to give it multiple listens.

That was something. That was something. It was quite fittingly Shakespearean. It was subtle. It was jarring. It was well done. I am still in shock. Oh god.

A wonderful story
Revisado: 08-22-21
A sci fi story about being human. Ren is easily a relatable character, she isn’t brave but she is brilliant, she is conflicted and the writing of how her guilt manifests itself is so real and so moving. Dressed in careful world building with some really neat sci-fi, it is true that a few elements are a little off, (I wish I understood the reverently religious scientists a bit more) and the climax was kind of shocking in a unsettling way. I do like how she closed it up in the last ten minutes, though I know there are conflicting feelings about it; I thought it was clever and beautiful and hopeful. Also Emma Newman has a lovely narrator voice.

Historia
Madison Wayward, niece to the most notorious captain among the outlaw Stardrifters, has a plan. She’ll stop at nothing to give humanity a flicker of hope in its darkest hour. If she would consider pausing, her plans might not blow up in her face quite so much. Kirehe Mahono, a skilled warrior with an uncommon gift, has a dragon. She’ll stop at nothing to protect her people from the enemy machines infesting her planet. If she had something better than a knife to bring to a laser fight, she might have better luck. Taken prisoner, both will have to harness their strengths to survive.

Madison is a terrible captain
Revisado: 08-14-21
Loses a crewmate then lusts after a “gorgeous native” and condescends over her crew and is showy and abrasive for no reason. All of her intended charm is cringy. She is a poorly constructed character.
It is a really cool and interesting world and concept. I like the different races and the idea of the oligarchy and the gladiator pit. I love the dragons and the dragons speaking. The dialogue is painful most of the time. I like Oolang, they were the best character.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Quite epic
Revisado: 08-10-21
It took me a year to start this book and once I started I finished it in about a week. This book is a symphony and it truly sings. Brutal and beautiful, it is clear and clean, satisfying in action, character development, story novelty, world building, and the smuggling in of philosophical musings. It is unique and it still feels familiar, because it is an exploration of humans and human nature in the most fantastic way.
