Historia
Ignorance of the law is no excuse! That’s true for a traffic stop, and it’s true if you want to participate in whatever’s left of American democracy. If the events since the 2016 election taught us anything, it’s that tuning out is not an option. Legal journalists Liz Dye and Andrew Torrez break down the week’s most important courtroom stories, so you can keep on top of this crazy news cycle. Whether it’s Texas giving two middle fingers to the Supreme Court, or Donald Trump in all the courts at once, we’ve got you covered.

IANAL but I love listening to them.
Revisado: 04-15-25
I follow several lawyers and podcasts because I enjoy hearing about crazy court cases, long suffering judges and constitutional law.
But recently I've made a point of listening to Law and Chaos because I want to keep an ear on the current POTUS and his administration.. and I believe that Andrew and Liz do an amazing job with that... accompanied by the sharp wit and sarcasm that can only be obtained from years of experience with the law (and with morons)
I (almost) always feel better after listening because most of the judges in the US are at least trying to reinstate the rule of law, which Congress apparently no longer cares about.

Maybe I'm just burned out?
Revisado: 03-08-25
I've read and or listened to every Nora Roberts (JD Robb) book since literally the 1980s. I've listened to the entire In Death series at least 3 times.
I own most of her books on E and Audio.. and the earlier books in paper because when my husband made me downsize.. her books were the ones I kept.
But I am 11 hours in and DNF.
I adored the Dragonheart Legacy books. So it's not all her new writing.. but I found this (and a couple other of her recent books) difficult.
And in writing that sentence I think I understand the problem. It's this style of book. I have trauma in my background and this book makes me incredibly anxious waiting for what's going to happen. And I keep looking and going 10 more hours, 8 more hours, 5 more hours... at 4 more hours I realized I was so uncomfortable I just didn't want to turn it back on. I want to know the ending but I can't force myself to get the presumably HEA.
So.. instead of the scathing commentary I was considering I'll just say that I don't think this is for me at this time. It's funny as I think I would have enjoyed their story if it weren't for the sword of Damocles over my head.
I did find having the characters voice every description was getting annoying. Yes it's a beautiful house/garden/picture/whatever but what guy wants to hear that his decorating is 'so cute'? Some of that could have been kept as a mental note instead of every description being spoken out loud.
I thought Ms LaVoy did a great job.

Ignore the haters
Revisado: 12-29-22
This is the start of a trilogy... 3 books but it's only the one story. Which is exactly why I don't start trilogies until after all 3 books have come out.
Nora changes up her style here. In this trilogy it's not book one = couple one. etc It's a story spread out over 3 books.
So everyone whining about the slow start... heck.. it's an entire world... yes based on some familiar tropes.. but it takes some time to lay the groundwork.
It is a fabulous story about a woman who has led an extremely sheltered life (for reasons well established in the book) and her finding herself. And yet all I see is whining about her being weak in the first book. Umm... that's the point. It's an epic journey of transformation and self awareness not a sex tape.
I loved it. I finished it, tried to start a new book.. couldn't get it out of my head and have started listening to it all over again.
And the Narrator is great. Really. None of that breathy, nasally crap you get when narrators try to do accents. Great diction, pace and clarity.
NR has some great books and some meh... and if I haven't read every one.. then it's not for lack of trying.. but when you write as much as she does they can't all be stars. However, I believe this series exhibits why she is one of the reigning queens of romance. L-O-V-E-D-I-T. Now if I could just get Marco to make dinner for me I'd be styling..

Only because I'm desperate
Revisado: 06-19-21
Decided to 're-read' the Castle books in order, this time as audiobook.
I try not to be overly critical of the voice actors. Especially in situations where they are voicing characters that I previously listened to with different narrators. But the narration for this is completely horrid. I've made it to chapter 14... but honestly I don't think I'll be able to finish listening. I'll finish the book by reading it and hope this narrator hasn't done the next book as well.

Just read the book
Revisado: 09-19-18
I've been waiting for this book "forever"... ok maybe it just feels like it. I couldn't wait to hear Marcus' story. But the narration is just horrible. Bad accents. Bad timing - she rushes through her words like they are a chore instead of being something to enjoy. I tried to get through it. Told myself it was just because it wasn't the same narrator. But I just couldn't.
Thankfully I also bought the book.
edit: 8/5/22 - Just loaded this book on my phone again... I had totally forgotten how bad the narration was. I really, really wanted to listen to it... I can't. She talks too fast and the pronounces things incorrectly.. and WTF is up with Marthe's name?
How much to have Jennifer Ikeda do an encore performance?

Exceptional book and excellent reader
Revisado: 08-24-14
I haven't enjoyed a series so much since JKR and young Mr Potter. In some ways these are similar worlds... Magic has been there all along and most just choose to pretend it does not exist. But this is no kid's book, immersed in descriptions and details that show real life emotions - good and bad - and how they affect the heroine (and hero)
I was not at all surprised to find that Ms. Harkness is a historian. The details are amazing and totally believable. The transitions between fiction and non-fiction seamless. And that just made it all that more real to me.
I hadn't read the book before I listened.. so I had no preconceived ideas about how it should sound.. and I thought Jennifer Ikeda did an exceptional job. One of the absolute best readers I have listened to. An extensive cast of characters with distinctive voices and accents. Well done.
Both Deborah Harkness and Jennifer Ikeda are now on my 'list'. I've heard that Deborah Harkness doesn't know if she will write any more fiction. I hope she does.
