Historia
A bonzer (p. 288) discussion of the strange but dinkum (p. 289) pedigree (p. 224) of the naughty (p. 202), nice (p. 212), and, sometimes, obscene (p. 217) English language. We live in a torrent of words — from radio and television, books and newspapers, and now from the internet. But, as Julian Burnside reminds us in this new edition of the bestselling Wordwatching, words are a source both of pleasure and power, and can be deployed for good or for ill.

Enjoyed
Revisado: 11-21-22
Really liked the nerdy and yet "basic" antipodean skew. Ozzy and Kiwis - closest allies and antagonists, with still being able to reference Mother England, while realising words and phrases we knew whilst children were already out of date at "home".

Historia
It’s the $10 million heist you’ve never heard of. In a matter of months, dozens of truckloads disappeared from American highways. But what were they carrying? Nuts. Marc Fennell takes you into a rabbit hole of crime syndicates, stolen identities and private investigators that will change the way you think about food forever. Eighty per cent of the world’s almonds are grown in the heart of California, but this journey will take you to Italy, the Spanish coast, deep under the earth and even into space.

Historia
Will is small for his age, but agile and energetic. All his life, he has dreamed of becoming a great knight like the father he never knew, so he is devastated when he is rejected as an apprentice to Castle Redmont's Battleschool. Instead he is apprenticed to Halt, the mysterious Ranger whose uncanny ability to move unseen is thought to be the result of black magic. Reluctantly, Will learns to use a Ranger's secret weapons: a bow and arrow, a mottled cloak and a stubborn little pony. It may not be what he longs for, but when he and Halt are sent out to prevention the assassination of the King....

Hoping the rest will be available at Audible
Revisado: 02-05-11
Thoroughly enjoyed what is apparently the first in a series and hoping the rest are available soon.
Instead of the "child without parents" story focusing on parentage, Will has to deal with the day-to-day challenges of being without patronage in a world I would like to know more about.
More, please?

Historia
Best-selling author Brian Fagan brings early humans out of the deep freeze with his trademark mix of erudition, cutting-edge science, and vivid storytelling. Cro-Magnon reveals human society in its infancy, facing enormous environmental challenges - including a rival species of humans, the Neanderthals. For ten millennia, Cro-Magnons lived side by side with Neanderthals, an encounter that Fagan fills with drama.

Enjoyed and wished for more
Revisado: 07-30-10
I thoroughly enjoyed both Part 1 (Neanderthals and the emergence of early modern man) and Part 2 (differences between remnants of known Cro-Magnon sites life and what they hint about the differences in lifestyle, climate and locale).
The speculation as to the daily lives of the people was as interesting as the facts - with carbon-dating, geological surveys, archaeological digs, current (or relatively recent) practices of Arctic, African and Aboriginal dwellers, all contributing.
