Historia
While on routine patrol in the tinder-dry Topanga Canyon, environmental scientist Rafael Salazar expects to find animal poachers, not a dilapidated antique steamer trunk. Inside the peculiar case, he discovers a journal, written by the renowned Robert Louis Stevenson, which divulges ominous particulars about his creation of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It also promises to reveal a terrible secret - the identity of Jack the Ripper.

I'm still listening and I still can't get into it!
Revisado: 11-29-22
I am halfway through and will probably stop listening unless some big plot detail comes up in the next hour. The story is SO SLOW, and I am still not sure where the plot is headed. The narrator who is performing Robert Lewis Stevenson is just awful. He is either doing a terrible job of imitating a Scottish accent, or he just doesn't know how, resulting in some foreign accent. I am disappointed.

Historia
It is 997 CE, the end of the Dark Ages. England is facing attacks from the Welsh in the west and the Vikings in the east. Those in power bend justice according to their will, regardless of ordinary people and often in conflict with the king. Without a clear rule of law, chaos reigns. In these turbulent times, three characters find their lives intertwined.

I was really waiting for this book!
Revisado: 09-20-20
I love Ken Follett's long, winding stories so I even pre ordered this one...but I had to stop. I simply could not stand the narrator one more minute! His inflection, his voices, his cadence - whatever - simply made me so distracted I hardly felt like I was listening to the story. I have heard him read other audio books and had the same reaction. Maybe it's me, but I recommend at least listening to a sample prior to purchase.

Told with the same old-fashioned narrative power as the novels of Herman Wouk, The Seamstress is the true story of Seren (Sara) Tuvel Bernstein and her survival during wartime. This powerful eyewitness account of survival, told with power and grace, will stay with listeners for years to come.

An excruciating listen...
Revisado: 12-08-14
Any additional comments?
Listening to this book was almost painful at times - maybe because of the subject matter or maybe because it was a true story but it does an incredible job of not letting us ever forget the horrors of the Holocaust. How this remarkable woman survived and even more, was able to survive with her good heart and caring soul intact is beyond my understanding. The will to live is strong in all humans, but Sara's ability to survive is beyond measure. Everyone should read this book and never, ever forget what happened during this terrible time.

Historia
After trying to help Benjamin Pearl, an undernourished, nearly feral 11-year-old boy living in the Montana wilderness, social worker Pete Snow comes face-to-face with the boy's profoundly disturbed father, Jeremiah. With courage and caution, Pete slowly earns a measure of trust from this paranoid survivalist itching for a final conflict that will signal the coming End Times. But as Pete's own family spins out of control, Pearl's activities spark the full-blown interest of the FBI, putting Pete at the center of a massive manhunt from which no one will emerge unscathed.

Though it can leave the reader bruised
Revisado: 11-06-14
Any additional comments?
Very, very well written. It was hard to turn this one off - because the story took so many twists and turns I was never sure what was going to happen next. It was fairly emotional listening - at times I felt as battered and bruised as the main character - but that's what good writing is all about - engaging the reader - right???

A Remarkably Creative Story
Revisado: 11-06-14
Any additional comments?
This was a great story, and the narration was good, but it was sometimes hard to follow because the author jumped back and forth in time, and because it all took place in a relatively small area in Europe, I wasn't always sure what time period we were in. Aside from that, the author is extremely creative and wove a story that was hard to stop listening to! It could have just been "operator error" because there were times it really took some concentration to follow the storyline.

A great story but hard to get through
Revisado: 08-14-14
Any additional comments?
A very good story especially if you are or have gone through the issues of dementia and Alzheimer's with a loved one. It truly goes into the mind of an Alzheimer's patient - it helped me understand how or what they are thinking. Hard to get through, though. I almost put it down several times because of my frustration with the main character ...I simply cannot imagine what a caregiver goes through when caring for someone with dementia. Truly insightful on the author's part.

What's wrong with the narrator???
Revisado: 07-31-14
Would you consider the audio edition of The Lion and the Rose to be better than the print version?
I enjoy the audio version because of the narrators. I have read some negative comments about the narrator who played the part of Giulia Farnese - but I have to say she has a beautiful voice and is superb with her Italian translation. I would listen to more of her books just for that reason. Too bad there isn't a third book in this series! The narrator who was Leonello was also wonderful - rich, deep voice.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved the history - although the author took a bit of liberty with serious true history. It is always fascinating to hear about other cultures and other eras.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I found myself sitting in my car once I reached home to listen to just a bit more. I was sorry to come to the end - which to me is a good sign of a good book!
