Historia
Known in health care circles for his ability to fix ailing hospitals, Dr. David Shulkin was originally brought into government by President Obama, in an attempt to save the broken Department of Veterans Affairs. When President Trump made him VA secretary, Dr. Shulkin was as shocked as anyone. Yet this surprise was trivial compared to what Shulkin encountered as the VA secretary: a team of political appointees devoted to stopping anyone - including the secretary himself - who stood in the way of privatizing the organization and implementing their agenda.

Chilling account of the mechanics involved in the attempts to privatize the VA
Revisado: 11-05-19
This book was and enlightening window into the positioning and tactics of the Washington elite in their attempts to move the veterans administration towards private medical care institutions and destabilizing this all too important branch of government. I was attracted to this account because it was written by a scientist a person who is well skilled in the arts of critical thinking and as such I knew I could get an unbiased account the incidents.

The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons

Historia
Early studies of the human brain used a simple method: Wait for misfortune to strike - strokes, seizures, infectious diseases, horrendous accidents - and see how victims coped. In many cases their survival was miraculous, if puzzling. Observers were amazed by the transformations that took place when different parts of the brain were destroyed, altering victims' personalities. With the lucid, masterful explanations and razor-sharp wit his fans have come to expect, Kean explores the brain's secret passageways.

Historia
The burgeoning new science of epigenetics offers a cornucopia of insights - some comforting, some frightening. For example, the male fetus may be especially vulnerable to certain common chemicals in our environment, in ways that damage not only his own sperm but also the sperm of his sons. And it’s epigenetics that causes identical twins to vary widely in their susceptibility to dementia and cancer. But here’s the good news: unlike mutations, epigenetic effects are reversible. Indeed, epigenetic engineering is the future of medicine.

Dated but decent

This is a fair but limited review of the basics of epigenetics. As a biologist I was left at the end with a desire for a more up-to-date review. It nonetheless cover some bases

A wonderful read
Revisado: 04-06-17
Although epic In scope the fine details of this wide ranging work emerge to enlighten the reader on the specific treasures of a somewhat modern day astronomy. And Neil DeGrass Tyson is a wonderful writer that always accomplishes the feat of bringing complex science into every day language and relating the experiences that we have in the day tonday to the epic span of the universe. I highly recommend this book

The gene is a chronologically historical account of the subject of genetics from the late 1800s and Mendells experiments to genetic engineering and biotechnology today. It is well written, well presented on audible, and thoroughly engaging as well as educational and entertaining the same time.
