Liked the human vignettes and first prison recollections. Long introductory section useful for those not familiar with the war, the Western Theater, or the origins of the battle

A wonderful reading of a towering work. Beevor captures the broad themes of history's most destructive war, but has the ability to "zoom in" like a telescope to show illistrative...and often painful...human detail.

Excellent! Like an old time radio drama. Best production in the franchise since ALIENS (aka ALIEN 2).

History almost ruined by a terrible narration

Catton's history of the second half of U.S. Grant's Civil War career is rightly famous, but it is almost RUINED by an appallingly bad narration by Kevin T. Collins. Collins cadence is strange and disjointed, with odd pauses and large numbers of jarring mispronunciations. Worse is his pedantic tone, like a junior high school student reclaiming a Shakespeare soliloquy in class, or a pompous teaching assistant lecturing in a community college. Continually hard to bear, one struggles through to redeem the investment of time made in the first volume, and the funds spent to purchase this atrocity.
Rather than purchase this, anyone interested in Grant is advised to listen to Bronson Pinchot's excellent performance of volume one... GRANT HEADS SOUTH....and read rather than listen to GRANT TAKES COMMAND.

An exceptional end of a fantastic telling of history as drama....or the creation of drama from the events of history. The whole series is highly recommend!

Although undermined by the reader's frequent mispronunciations and strange cadence, the author had many useful insights into a complex conflict that became a trial of social endurance. His scholarship was occasionally undermined by editorializing that went beyond his research.

The Revolutionary experience through a kaleidoscop

Revisado: 05-05-19

The author examines the period surrounding the American Revolution though the eyes of many actors, not just the American revolutionaries and British government, but American Loyalists, the governments and colonies of France and Spain, the enslaved, native nations, women and the working poor. An impressive work and we'll worth slogging through, although the effort is sometimes a task. The author undermines himself by a tendency to "pick sides" and snear at the oppressor or victimizer, with some actors getting a chance to be both heroes and villains depending on the side of various societal clashes Taylor supports at that point in the book. The performance is fair, but undermined by the reader's tendency to LITERALLY snear at Taylor's villains, often performing their quotes with cartoonish foppish or thuggish accents, depending on their social station or nationality. Worth a listen despite it defects.
