Hard ti fairly rate the story, because of the narration, which made it hard to stick with. I tried it at different speeds but nothing helped. I’d say just listen to the preview first

Liked the entire book - brilliantly written and plotted- as great a work as anything Peter Grainger has ever done.

It”s a good book, rendered almost unlistenable by the narration. At 1x the reader’s voice is intolerable…speedy, squeaky, and also somehow saccharine … i tried 9.5… then 9… wound up listening to the whole thing at an unbelievable 8.5
At which speed …EXTREMELY slowed -down, i realized the reader actually has a fine voice- you’d almost say a lovely voice. (!!!!!?)

A great study in contrasts - the self reflection and criticism of the good hearted Brunetti vs the self importance and egoism of the people he sometimes deals with. Leon is a writer with no contemporary equal or comparison - a dash of Balzac and a bit of le Carre’s deftness of character

Long live Brunetti & Paola .. the divine signorina Elletra and all the rest

Brilliant characters, story, narration
Serious, realistic and utterly absorbing. Does not fit easily into the spectrum of detective fiction in pretty much the same way that leCarre transcends the spy genre. There is an unerring line and logic to the writing and a measure of warmth and depth that is matched by the reader Gildart Jackson. Highly recommend the whole series

Brilliant short stories that reveal a little more of these already very real characters from an established series of novels. The "shorts" easily stand on their own, however, because the two main characters are so well drawn, and 'at ease' in a sense, that they just inhabit the short episodes, and make them work without a lot of description needed. ’The whole series: setting; plot-lines,; relationships; dialogue, is very real. ‘Cozy’ if you must (Audible editors!) but without the artificial sweetener--thankfully no cats, quilts, apple crumble, etc; just once in a while the perfect martini and grilled sirloin Main characters Jack and Sarah are a partnership along the lines of Nick and Nora Charles, or "Falco and Helena Justina in the English countryside": Jack, a retired NYC detective, is someone you know, or wish you knew, and Sarah, a single parent running a small design business (how realistic a design business for the time being: one big client is a local funeral home). In a new twist by the authors : ) a female character who is capable, serious, (kind, thoughtful, articulate...polite!!!) and utterly reliable, yet never boring. They may not be a couple (not even after nearly 30 books) but there's some very subtle, unmistakable chemistry in the wings . He is charming and forthright, while retaining the natural suspicion and cynicism of a long time homicide detective; she is learning to be both. Incongruously, for Sarah I keep seeing Duchess Kate undercover in Cherringham (I know... but "coping gracefully with every imaginable challenge... while not exactly thrilled to be the centre of attention"- doesn't that sound familiar : ) --and learning to drink Scotch.

This is a terrific book but my comments are really on the whole epic body of work (I've just finally been pushed to the point of having to say something). Brett's people --finely drawn, funny, sharp, poignant, real--.are simply brilliant, effortless creations--every one of of them (from the 'howon earthcan he possiblybesuch asympatheticcharacter Charles Paris", to the goddess Mrs. Pargetter, the Feathering girls, and every bit player in his sphere. However celebrated or widely -read he may be, Brett is under-rated. One of the greats!

Otherwise perfect. These are really charming and fun. They'd be that much better if only Queenie could die a quiet death (or go out whining if she must!)
