Historia
Willow Havens is 10 years old and obsessed with the fear that her mother will die. Her mother, Polly, is a cantankerous, take-no-prisoners Southern woman who lives to chase varmints, drink margaritas, and antagonize the neighbors - and she sticks out like a sore thumb among the young, modern mothers of their small conventional Texas town. She was in her late 50s when Willow was born, so Willow knows she's here by accident, a late-life afterthought.

His carefully constructed routine includes tracking his most common waking time (7:38 a.m.), refusing to start his therapy sessions even a minute before the appointed hour (10:00 a.m.), and watching one episode of the 1960s cop show Dragnet each night (10:00 p.m.). But when a single mother and her nine-year-old son move in across the street, Edward’s timetable comes undone....

Historia
It is 1938 and the final days of the British Empire. The story centres around the Pavilion in the Clouds, set in the idyllic grounds carved out of the wilderness. But all is not as serene as it seems. Bella is suspicious of her governess, Miss White’s intentions.

Weird story
Revisado: 01-04-25
I really did not enjoy this book. The ending redeemed it a little. Kind of depressing. But good narration. I’m going to stick to 1st Ladies from now on. I’m bummed because I bought this in 2 for 1 sale and a few days later a 1st Ladies book showed up which wasn’t there before. Wish I’d gotten that instead!

Took awhile to get into
Revisado: 11-30-24
The story definitely grew on me. A few things bothered me. One was the accent of dragon which was like a Transylvanian vampire but his sister’s and mother’s accents weren’t the same. Also Arkady is always telling the story normally but Everen is always speaking directly to Arkady. It’s explained in the end but just seemed weird all the way through. I would have saved that artifice until the end of the book. I found it distracting. The other thing that irked me throughout was they were talking about someone and switched from he to “they”. (Nothing to do with gender— just another annoying artifice). It was an ok story but I’ve read better. Not sure if I’ll listen to a sequel.

Interesting Story Didn’t like the narrator
Revisado: 11-22-24
I don’t usually listen to abridged audiobooks but it was ok in this instance. I thought the plot was ok but I guessed way ahead what was going on. Pretty dated as far as forensics. But I really didn’t like the narrator. I felt like the accents were exaggerated and didn’t feel authentic.

I know a lot of people are complaining about the ending. And it’s true that a sequel would be nice. But I was satisfied with the ending. As usual, King creates characters whom you care about. And the ending still leaves you with hope.

Interesting but too long
Revisado: 10-18-24
There were parts of the story that were really interesting, but I felt that it was too long. I like stories with twists but this had so many bad things happen to the characters that I started to roll my eyes after awhile. Every single scene had something go wrong. The narration was good but one complaint I have is that he lowered his voice for women speakers which made it difficult to hear if listening in my car. Also some of the whiny voices were annoying Personally, I didn’t find the medieval setting to be that interesting. The explanation of why the butterfly effect wasn’t valid was kind of interesting but think the story would have been better if the history was changed somehow. I can’t say how without a spoiler. But I would have had one of the bad characters change things for his benefit. I really liked the ending though.
