Historia
Chava is a golem, a woman made of clay, who can hear the thoughts and longings of those around her and feels compelled by her nature to help them. Ahmad is a jinni, a restless creature of fire, once free to roam the desert but now imprisoned in the shape of a man. Fearing they’ll be exposed as monsters, these magical beings hide their true selves and try to pass as human - just two more immigrants in the bustling world of 1900s Manhattan. Brought together under calamitous circumstances, their lives are now entwined - but they’re not yet certain of what they mean to each other.

I highly enjoyed this second adventure with the Golem and Jinn and all those humans as well! I wonder if there will be a third tail to round out this series? Will the evil be released?? (I sincerely hope not) if it ends here it’s still quite a sweet stopping point. Highly recommend!!!

Another amazing story from Emily!
Revisado: 09-03-23
I don’t know how she does it. I do know she definitely loves the shipping industry, and I can’t be the only one who noticed the character cross-overs right?!?!? (No spoilers but now I really hope her next endeavor would continue to blend those realities) Yes there were some infuriating moments, but most of them were eventually unfolded and able to be better understood. I truly loved the bit of “mystical ness” as some other reviewers have mentioned- I’d say otherworldliness- it made me go from enjoyment to the next level up. Just like Station Eleven, I know I’m going to listen to this one again.

Historia
The year is 1143. Hildegard, already a well-known physician, has expanded her work to writing not just about medicine but on theological matters as well. Once again, the monks of St. Disibod are there to stop her, citing the biblical passages that admonish against "women teachers". Also, Abbot Kuno is aging, and it is only a matter of time before he is succeeded in the post by Prior Helenger, who wants nothing more than to see Hildegard permanently relegated to the convent's enclosure.

Beautiful enveloping storytelling

I enjoyed both books in this series! The narration and the storytelling kept me at rapt attention and also I appreciated the semi-autobiographical nature of this real-life protagonist and her struggles and accomplishments.

The only time I’ve purchased extra credits to keep reading the series!
Revisado: 02-21-23
I’ve just finished this trilogy, and I’ve got nothing but love for it! The narration was great, the characters well-formed and as you go along you will come to love or hate them in kind. The world-building also was very well-done and rooted (ha!) in just the right amount of realism. It’s got it all- moments I cheered or laughed out loud and others where I was brought to tears. If there was a fourth book, I’d have run right towards it and not taken the time to write this review right now!

Historia
From Rose Tremain comes the Booker Prize short-listed novel that “restored the historical novel to its rightful place of honor” ( New York Times). Robert Merivel, son of a glove maker and an aspiring physician, finds his fortunes transformed when he is given a position at the court of King Charles II. Merivel slips easily into a life of luxury and idleness, enthusiastically enjoying the women and wine of the vibrant Restoration age. But when he’s called on to serve the king in an unusual role, he transgresses the one law he is forbidden to break and is brutally cast out from his newfound paradise.

Now at last Keith Richards pauses to tell his story in the most anticipated autobiography in decades. And what a story! Listening obsessively to Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters records in a coldwater flat with Mick Jagger and Brian Jones, building a sound and a band out of music they loved. Finding fame and success as a bad-boy band, only to find themselves challenged by authorities everywhere....

Came for Johnny, stayed for Keith
Revisado: 09-25-22
I was drawn to this book originally because of Johnny Depps narration and knowledge of his close relationship to Keith and how he’d inspired Johnnys character of Captain Jack Sparrow. I ended up finding that Keith is an amazing storyteller in himself and yes, just how much he inspired the portrayal of the now beloved pirate. Would recommend to rock aficionados, bio readers and of course, Depp fans.

Fantastic lyrical story
Revisado: 09-25-22
It started with me listening to Stephen Fry’s Mythos and brought me to the doors of this fantastical, lyrical story. I’ve always loved Greek mythology, but found particular delight in the telling from a woman’s point of view. You’re really able to let yourself be encompassed by the world Miller has built and when you finally emerge, it will still leave you with a satisfying warmth- now that your imagination has been fed and stoked anew. I recommend to anyone who loves mythology and magic.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Personal and vivid- beautifully delivered!
Revisado: 09-25-22
This book set me on a hungry path to find more fiction that addressed familial ties, struggles, pain and love. The narration by Tom Hanks was so warm and natural it really felt like I was in the mind of the protagonist, or at least he and I were sitting at a table, sipping hot cups of tea while the rain pattered on the windows nearby. Personal and vivid- I recommend this book to everyone who asks what they should read next.

February 1862. The Civil War is less than one year old. The fighting has begun in earnest, and the nation has begun to realize it is in for a long, bloody struggle. Revisado: 09-25-22
The narration was superb- and honestly it’s something that can so greatly affect a reader/listener’s overall experience with a book. I loved the mystical/spiritual aspect as well as the historical framework that it was grown around, which added even more depth and richness to the story. It was really difficult to find something else to dig into after finishing this one!

Historia
Out of Love begins at the end. A couple call it quits after nearly five years, and while holding a box of her ex-boyfriend’s belongings, the young woman wonders: How could they have spent so long together? When did they fall out of love? Were there good times before the bad? These are the questions we obsess over when a relationship ends, even when obsessing can do no good. But instead of moving forward through the emotional fallout of a break-up, Out of Love moves backward in time, weaving together an already unraveled tapestry.

Revisado: 09-25-22
You ever realize how some books come into your life at the exact moment you need to read them? That’s how I found this one. Narration was lovely, the storytelling was just close enough home to be relatable and the truths learnt were profound and felt. I am calling this now- I can absolutely see this being adapted for the screen. Looking forward to reading more from this author!
