Historia
Leopold Bloom King has been raised in a family shattered - and shadowed - by tragedy. Lonely and adrift, he searches for something to sustain him and finds it among a tightly knit group of outsiders. Surviving marriages happy and troubled, unrequited loves and unspoken longings, hard-won successes and devastating breakdowns, as well as Charleston, South Carolina’s dark legacy of racism and class divisions, these friends will endure until a final test forces them to face something none of them are prepared for.

Historia
Since the dawn of human history, birds have stirred our imagination, inspiring and challenging our ideas about science, faith, art, and philosophy. We have worshipped birds as gods, hunted them for sustenance, adorned ourselves with their feathers, studied their wings to engineer flight, and, more recently, attempted to protect them. In Birds and Us, award-winning writer and ornithologist Tim Birkhead takes us on a dazzling epic journey through our mutual history with birds.

Why birds ate important
Revisado: 06-22-24
Good social history of interaction between birds and humans. I enjoy watching birds although I am not a birder. The stories of bird behavior and importance of them in science was something I had not considered.

Guernica is great way to learn about Spanish history
Revisado: 01-19-24
This is a compelling and well told story which brings to life the Bas region in Spain and the history caribús Guernica. I read book after a trip to present day Guernica and seeing the painting in Madrid. I recommend this for those who like historical fiction.

Historia
On a rainy November evening, a young woman hurries through the crowd in London’s historic Russell Square. Out of the darkness, someone jostles her, then brushes past. A moment later, she stumbles, collapsing against a tree. When a young mother finds her body and alerts the police, Detective Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and his sergeant, Doug Cullen, are called to the scene. The victim, Sasha Johnson, is a trainee doctor at a nearby hospital, and she’s been stabbed.

Enjoyed this book - wonderful pacing of story. All the police inspectors and other staff seemed very human, no stereotypes. I have not read this author for a few years but plan to read more of her recent books

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

Great story with memorable characters. The author introduces a lot characters quickly and it’s a bit confusing. However, the story quickly sorts out with a few major characters.

Historia
On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

Fun who done it set in Ireland
Revisado: 08-21-20
An exclusive wedding party set on a remote Irish island gives the wedding party and their guests opportunities to re-evaluate past events and, for some, seek revenge. The book kept me guessing right to the end. Performances by actors fit tone of book very well.

I thought the plot was predictable but I still enjoyed the story. The character of Walter was a loose end— was he a device to try to keep us guessing Louise’s real intentions.
