Now I really miss Simon Prebble!!
Revisado: 12-04-24
My introduction to Stephanie Laurens and romance audio was through the narration by Simon Prebble. No doubt the author is very good and the story is compelling, but it was the narration that brought it alive. This book is such a disappointment. Mr. Brenher's narration is akin to someone reading the phone book - boring is the kindest description of it. I am almost through the book only because I am persistent and like to finish things, but I can hardly wait for it to end.

"I think the Cosmopolis is a bally rotten hotel!" Back at the Hotel Cosmopolis, Archie once again finds himself confronted by Mr. Brewster, who resembles nothing so much as a "man-eating fish." And then the fun begins...

Brilliant quintessential Wodehouse
Revisado: 02-23-24
I can listen to any Wodehouse story and this one was no exception. The only note of discord was the narrator. His accent is correct but he cannot do voices that sound authentic or believable. Almost made me give up, but for the brilliant writing. Next time I’ll have to avoid the narrator so I can fully enjoy the story.

When an American tourist is murdered with a scone in Gemma Rose's quaint English tearoom, she suddenly finds herself apron-deep in a mystery involving long-buried secrets from Oxford's past. Armed with her insider knowledge of the university and with the help of four nosy old ladies from her local Cotswolds village (not to mention a cheeky little tabby cat named Muesli), Gemma sets out to solve the mystery - all while dealing with her matchmaking mother and the return of her old college love, Devlin O'Connor, now a dashing CID detective.

Possibly for younger readers
Revisado: 12-18-23
The narrator did her best to put some color into a fairly insipid story. The main character is a silly twit with stereotypical reactions and over reactions to situations. The plot is formulaic but the language is good.
I imagine the story appealing to 15 to 20 year olds who are new to mysteries.

Good story FABULOUS narrator
Revisado: 04-22-23
This is not one of Ellis Peter’s best, a little drawn out as if it wanted to be a movie. But Simon Prebble’s narration can even make the phone book interesting to me.

Historia
Frances Wynn, the American-born Countess of Harleigh, enjoys more freedom as a widow than she did as a wife. After an obligatory year spent mourning her philandering husband, Reggie, she puts aside her drab black gowns, leaving the countryside and her money-grubbing in-laws behind. With her young daughter in tow, Frances rents a home in Belgravia and prepares to welcome her sister, Lily, arriving from New York - for her first London season.

A formulaic predictable tale told very badly
Revisado: 04-03-21
Listening to this audio book reminded me why I set a firm rule to choose a book by choosing a narrator first. The story is mediocre fluff, with a ninny for a protagonist and very standard characters and plot line. This in itself would be inoffensive, and fill the space where mindless and easily forgettable narratives live. However, this story is almost unbearable because of the narration; Ms. Zimmerman's cadence makes her treat the end of every sentence like a question with the last word rising in cadence. It is a serious disservice to Ms. Freeman's story, mediocre though it is. Such a story can be made bearable, even mildly enjoyable when read by a decent narrator.
This was a disaster; one folk will do well to avoid.

Historia
He was a gossip columnist’s dream. Piccadilly Jim’s life was a collage of broken promises and drunken brawls. And his straight-laced Victorian aunt was not amused. So, she decided to reform him. Unfortunately, her reform project started at a time when Jim had fallen in love and had already decided to reform himself. Thus, life became complicated. Jim pretends to be himself - a beautiful display of Wodehousean logic; hilarious indeed!

Terrible narrator
Revisado: 09-17-17
I am a diehard Wodehouse fan and bought this audio book without checking the narration first. I really regret the oversight. The story is classic Wodehouse brilliance but the narrator ruins it. He may be good at other genres, but he should never read Wodehouse again.

Disappointing performance
Revisado: 07-09-16
What disappointed you about The Capture of the Earl of Glencrae?
I have been hooked on Stephanie Lauren's Cynster series for years and realized, for the first time that what I truly enjoyed was Simon Prebble's reading. This time I could barely manage to listen to the end; Matthew Brenher was utterly disappointing - made the story seem quite boring.
Alas, it seems Mr. Prebble has moved on to other authors and in my opinion it is Ms. Laurens's loss.
What was most disappointing about Stephanie Laurens’s story?
The performer.
