Historia
Emily was in a restaurant, having lunch with her father – the next thing she remembers is waking up, naked, in a strange hotel room, next to a man she did not know. She suspected she had been drugged and raped. She later found out she had been filmed without her consent. What happened to her that night could have happened to anyone. What came next happens to far too many victims, as failures by the police, CPS and other parts of the system, led to Emily doubting she would ever find justice.

Sharp narrative and a devastating blow
Revisado: 02-26-23
The prose is crisp and the story has compelling tension driving it forward. The structure is clear and you'll be pulled in. But as for the content of the story, it's absolutely maddening. Really, that's how the system works!? This book is so important as we all need to get this critical conversation normalized and our myths into a spotlight.

Adore this series. This one is not super audio-format friendly
Revisado: 09-07-22
I count this series as my all-time favorite, and JKR/RG never disappoints as a master storyteller. That said, this story takes some getting used to if your preferred format is audiobook, and some complexities were very much lost on me. But I suppose that just means I’ll have to re-listen again soon.

Historia
London 1814... Drake, Duke of Manchester is searching the Marriage Mart for a perfect bride. He wants a woman who is poised, sophisticated, and worthy of the title Duchess. But most of all, he wants a woman who does not want the useless emotion of love. Socially awkward Miss Penelope Clayton isn't meant for marriage. A serious botanist, she has no desire to wed, so being forced by her guardian to participate in the Season to find a husband is torture.

Where’s the conflict?
Revisado: 08-30-22
I get it, it’s a romance. But… no real character conflict, or drama to drive the story. Add to that weird gaps in the timeline, a strange allusion to the duke’s mother during the first sex scene (far into the novella), and jarring out-of-character moments like sudden pet names. You could argue there’s a little character development, but not enough to make a plot irrelevant. It’s also not steamy enough to overlook it.
Narrator’s American accent sounds as bad as my British, with some odd inflections for male or older characters. It was free, so I won’t ask for a refund but I’m not interested in more of this series.

Historia
Animals are the direct product of their environment. They reactively evolve over time based on external circumstances. The process of their evolution is slow and random. Human beings are the indirect product of their environment. Although the environment is the medium through which humans adapt and evolve, our choices determine our environments. This is the fundamental difference. We get to decide the course and intensity of our personal evolution by intelligently designing our environments.

Historia
In January 2019, culture writer Anne Helen Petersen set the internet on fire with her viral BuzzFeed essay diagnosing “millennial burnout” - a chronic state of stress and exhaustion that’s become a “base temperature” for young people today. Now, she continues this generation-defining conversation in a brand-new format, interviewing millennials around the country about their own deeply personal experiences with burnout, and the culture that creates it.

Kind of a recap of what I already knew, but
Revisado: 11-07-19
Despite that (or maybe because of it?) I found this piece to be important in my own life. What I’m left with after the fact is a mix of hopelessness — things won’t ever significantly change when there’s so much to be gained by some in maintaining the status quo — and a burning light in the fog — you’re not crazy for feeling this way.
It’s worth the read, and I’ll recommend this to others, but I’m left wanting something more. Maybe that’s the point?

Historia
A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of very curious photographs. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets 16-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

AWFUL accents
Revisado: 12-18-18
I get that this is an AYA title, and maybe it's different for kids, but this narrator's terrible British accents are so distracting. Story is fairly compelling, dialogue and themes typically youth-oriented.

Disjointed and disheartened
Revisado: 06-16-18
The characters that you got to sporadically love in the first book are largely abandoned in a staccato flip flop where extra after extra is introduced and killed in order to progress a souless space battle. I think it's fine to buck the normal hero's story arch but that doesn't mean you can't still invest in a personality. I'm not in it for R.C. Bray, I want the heroes he's given life and there are none here.

Entertaining for awhile, then interpersonal relationship drama
Revisado: 12-16-17
The first half of this book was great, and the writing is intelligent and skillful. I was looking forward to unraveling mystery and history, and loved the academic bent to the story arc. After awhile it turned into a relationship drama, though, and I just don’t have the patience to finish it.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.
