While I am truly appalled at the indignity and tragedy of what and how these characters suffered, it most accurately represents a very dark chapter in American history. What truly breaks my heart is their resilience and desire to live their lives as any human does. It was well written and gave an insight and perspective to each character’s plight.

Life Lessons in Ethics, Honesty and Courage

As a female entering the workforce in this same timeframe, her story sadly rang all too true. I was rapt by the storyline and its ability to conjure long buried memories of sexist snubs. She made me root for her as a heroine who finally received due credit.

The narrator literally brought me to tears. I wonder how he managed to infuse this telling of such a poignant and tragic slice of history without succumbing to its many facets of emotions.

Would you try another book from Barbara Kingsolver and/or Barbara Kingsolver?

I've read other books (in paper) by Barbara Kingsolver. I won't read another of her books if she is the narrator.

How could the performance have been better?

If it was narrated by someone other than the author.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I don't know because I couldn't suffer through her performance. Her writing is usually excellent, but her narration was more than I could overcome in order to complete the book. She needs to stick to her pros and skip the narration.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely, because there are plenty of "us" out there that need to hear this message: "You have so much to offer so don't sell yourself short."

Being an introvert isn't a negative.

This book has put my life into perspective as no other book could. As a shy introvert, I can rest in the knowledge that no explanation is necessary for "being me". Turns out, I'm pretty cool, and always sitting in the back of the room is perfectly acceptable. Yay me and thanks Susan Cain!!!

I couldn't even get thru the first few chapters due to poor sound quality. Some parts audibly exploded while others kept me tensed trying to hear dialogue. I don't think you should have to keep your finger on the volume button in order to comfortably listen to a book. Was hoping it would be like radio stories of the past. It was free so I can't really complain, but I was anticipating a fun adventure...

Women are strong

Who was your favorite character and why?

Cheryl, of course, because she had a goal that wasn't easy, she was ill equipped and pretty much uninformed, yet she never gave up.
