Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

lots of action, yes. original story? I wonder. could have been much shorter book if the cringey sex scenes were cut out. dialogue didn't suit the characters, and there was an awful lot of "oh, hooray, that was scary but we are badasses. let's screw."
it's a YA book meaning there are a lot of young people out there reading this who are younger than the target audience...do you really want them listening to graphic sex scenes?

Historia
In the wake of her mother's death, Shalini, a privileged and restless young woman from Bangalore, sets out for a remote Himalayan village in the troubled northern region of Kashmir. Certain that the loss of her mother is somehow connected to the decade-old disappearance of Bashir Ahmed, a charming Kashmiri salesman who frequented her childhood home, she is determined to confront him. But upon her arrival, Shalini is brought face to face with Kashmir's politics, as well as the tangled history of the local family that takes her in. And then life in the village turns volatile and old hatreds threaten to erupt into violence.

superb
Revisado: 02-08-21
The absolute best part of this book was the narration, it is perfect!.
The story was well-done, slightly heavy-handed in its depiction of the dichotomies of privilege, but written in such lovely prose I can forgive that. The descriptions of the mountainous village where the protagonist journeys are breathtaking. The story is almost a memoir of a young woman who sets out from her wealthy family home in Bangalore in search of a man who once befriended her now-deceased mother. She travels to A typical but poor village in Kashmir and soon begins to see a strife-ridden way of life she had not imagined. There is a lot to learn about the politics of India and this book is a great introduction.

Historia
On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge.

twisted
Revisado: 08-13-20
Great story but the characters are seriously twisted. I resisted this book for years but am glad I listened to it, even if just to remind me how sick seemingly-normal folks can be. Super narration!

Historia
John Lithgow has compiled an outstanding collection of memorable poems and has gathered his famous friends to read them. The wide variety of carefully selected poetry in this audiobook provides the perfect introduction to reel in those who are new to poetry, and for poetry lovers to experience beloved verses in a fresh, vivid way. Lithgow offers insightful and sometimes poignant commentary to accompany each poem. His essential criterion is that "each poem's light shines more brightly when read aloud".

Revisado: 12-05-19
I'm already a poetry fan but being able to hear these works read aloud by such beautiful voices elevates them. This is a lovely collection of mostly well-known poems with lots of interesting tidbits. If you are curious about poems, don't necessarily know what to listen to, try this book out.

Historia
The Remains of the Day is a profoundly compelling portrait of the perfect English butler and of his fading, insular world in postwar England. At the end of his three decades of service at Darlington Hall, Stevens embarks on a country drive, during which he looks back over his career to reassure himself that he has served humanity by serving "a great gentleman". But lurking in his memory are doubts about the true nature of Lord Darlington's "greatness" and graver doubts about his own faith in the man he served.

Historia
In 2015, Barbara Lipska - a leading expert on the neuroscience of mental illness - was diagnosed with melanoma that had spread to her brain. Within months, her frontal lobe, the seat of cognition, began shutting down. She descended into madness, exhibiting dementia- and schizophrenia-like symptoms that terrified her family and coworkers. But miraculously, the immunotherapy her doctors had prescribed worked quickly. Just eight weeks after her nightmare began, Lipska returned to normal. With one difference: she remembered her brush with madness with exquisite clarity.

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

Very suspenseful psych-thriller. You may figure out who (and you may not), and you may figure out why (and you may not). Lots of layers to this story, but I couldn't wait to get them all sorted.

Historia
One wrong move can undercut your message. Believe it or not, our bodies speak louder than our words. Postures, gestures, and expressions convey reams of information - and often not what you'd expect. A smile, for example, is usually considered welcoming. But crook one corner of your mouth higher, and you project superiority, subconsciously chasing other people away. Without Saying a Word explains how even the subtlest motions have meaning.

need a hard copy!
Revisado: 04-04-19
I enjoyed this, found the subject very interesting, but if you're really looking to use this as a solid reference, you might consider buying a hard copy. There is supplemental material that makes virtually no sense without being able to see it. And maybe it's just me, but remembering all the clues to body language is tough--but still fascinating!
