Historia
Dorothea Truelove is young, wealthy, and beautiful. Ruth Butterham is young, poor, and awaiting trial for murder. When Dorothea's charitable work brings her to Oakgate Prison, she is delighted by the chance to explore her fascination with phrenology and test her hypothesis that the shape of a person's skull can cast a light on their darkest crimes. But when she meets one of the prisoners, the teenaged seamstress Ruth, she is faced with another strange idea.

Better book than narrator
Revisado: 02-16-25
I am not sure why so many narrators think a breathy, whiny voice is an excellent choice, but it makes me want to gouge out my ears. Ruth is a compelling, complicated character. The villains in the dress shop were not that believable, even for the 19th century. The last 1/4 of the book is ridiculous, as is the other main character’s silly dallying with a police officer and trying to disobey her suddenly violent father. Overall, this would make good airplane reading but the narrator took even that joy away.

Historia
The one thing you never talk about while you’re in the Scholomance is what you’ll do when you get out. Not even the richest enclaver would tempt fate that way. But it’s all we dream about: the hideously slim chance we’ll survive to make it out the gates and improbably find ourselves with a life ahead of us, a life outside the Scholomance halls. And now the impossible dream has come true. I’m out, we’re all out. We saved everyone. So much for my great-grandmother’s prophecy of doom and destruction. Ha, only joking! Actually, it’s gone all wrong.

Excellent series
Revisado: 10-19-23
Novik is a superb storyteller whose characters bear up to re-reading/listening. I enjoyed this third installment more each time I listened to it, and that has also been true for the first two books in the series. The world she creates is solidly imagined and consistent. Her characters are believable, three dimensional, and likeable. And she gets extra points for her vocabulary-“don’t be mawkish” had me rejoicing for the perfection of the adverb.

Brilliant
Revisado: 03-07-22
Will Patton channels Maggie Stiefvater’s rich and beautiful imagination. The Raven Cycle and the Dreamer books (two so far) are brilliant, as is their narration. I have listened to all of them multiple times and enjoy them more each time. This is a rare gift.
