Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Honest and unvarnished memoir
Revisado: 05-28-24
I liked the way McCurdy presented her memoir in a non-sentimental way. This made it feel very genuine and more relatable. I don’t think “enjoyed” is a way to describe this book, but I found it impactful and resonated with a lot of the themes and experiences.

Historia
young woman is murdered in her Oslo flat. One finger has been severed from her left hand, and behind her eyelid is secreted a tiny red diamond in the shape of a five-pointed star – a pentagram, the devil’s star. Detective Harry Hole is assigned to the case with his long-time adversary Tom Waaler and initially wants no part in it. But Harry is already on notice to quit the force and is left with little alternative but to drag himself out of his alcoholic stupor and get to work. A wave of similar murders is on the horizon. An emerging pattern suggests that Oslo has a serial killer on its hands....

Another enjoyable Harry Hole novel
Revisado: 05-26-21
I love Jo Nesbo's writing and "The Devil's Star" doesn't disappoint. This installment of the Harry Hole saga wasn't as gripping as others have been, but thoroughly enjoyable nonetheless.

Phenomenal book!
Revisado: 11-18-20
I was absolutely absorbed by this book from start to finish. Easily one of the best crime novels I've ever read/listened to. I love that Nesbo creates such an intricate story that (even with all the pieces given) it still only comes together at the end as a surprise. I highly recommend this book to anyone. The flashbacks were a little hard to follow in the audio version, because the dates and places couldn't be scrolled back to. However, the performance was good enough to carry me along even without being able to leaf back pages.

Historia
The Colour of Magic, the first novel in Terry Pratchett's wildly imaginative Discworld series, takes the listener on a remarkable journey. The magical planet of Discworld is supported by four massive elephants who stand on the back of the Great A'Tuin, a giant turtle swimming slowly through the mysterious interstellar gulf. An eccentric expedition sets out to explore the planet, encountering dragons who only exist if you believe in them, and, of course, 'The Edge' of the planet.

Quality of recording not good
Revisado: 06-22-20
I love the story and writing as well as the quality of the voice acting. However, the recording quality is not good. It seems like the actor was too far from the mic at times or something like that. It really detracted from my enjoyment of the story.

Felt like Dante's Inferno with a modern twist. Also felt it wasn't overtly religious which was a nice thing. Thoroughly enjoyed the performance too.

Historia
Ruby Lennox was conceived grudgingly by Bunty and born while her father, George, was in the Dog and Hare in Doncaster, telling a woman in an emerald dress and a D cup that he wasn't married. Bunty had never wanted to marry George, but there she was, stuck in a flat above the pet shop in an ancient street beneath York Minster, with sensible and sardonic Patrica, aged five; greedy, cross-patch Gillian, who refused to be ignored; and Ruby...

Excellent writing and performance
Revisado: 10-31-19
This book will make you laugh out loud in one breath and want to cry in the next. Many layers of this story unfold gradually.
Atkinson, as usual, writes excellently and delivers complex characters and tackles difficult issues. Susan Jameson brings these characters to life in a way which complements the book wonderfully.
Highly recommended, as always.

Cambridge is sweltering, during an unusually hot summer. Jackson has never felt at home in Cambridge and has a failed marriage to prove it.

Loved it!
Revisado: 08-22-19
This book has been my first introduction to Kate Atkinson, and I’m hooked. I can’t get enough of her beautiful writing combined with the dark undercurrent present in all of her works. I’ve read/listened to two more books of hers since this one and they’re all wonderful. Definitely recommending this for my book club.

Historia
It is the Edinburgh Festival. People queuing for a lunchtime show witness a road-rage incident--an incident which changes the lives of everyone involved. Jackson Brodie, ex-army, ex-police, ex-private detective, is also an innocent bystander--until he becomes a suspect. With Case Histories, Kate Atkinson showed how brilliantly she could explore the crime genre and make it her own. In One Good Turn, she takes her masterful plotting one step further.

Expected more of a twist
Revisado: 08-22-19
I love how Kate Atkinson writes so beautifully about such bleak and seedy things. I loved the performance and I loved the characters. I was a little disappointed at how she tied up the threads in the end, though. Still a lovely and engaging story.

Excellent performance, excellent book!
Revisado: 04-29-19
When I first looked at this audio book, it seemed too long... But when I had finished it, I wanted more! Absolutely wonderful voice acting by Roy Dotrice - so many different voices really brings the book to life. The book itself is rich and captivating. I was hoping to get stuck in traffic so that I could continue listening. So much is overlooked in the TV series. This book is well worth it.

An interesting take on the vampire story. Loved the narration, very engaging. Fred himself annoys me a lot - but I suppose he’s meant to. Will listen to the others in the series for sure.
