Educational and enjoyable
Revisado: 07-26-21
The story, narrator, and concept are all winners in this book. People interested in medicine, patients themselves, and those who enjoy mysteries of any kind would enjoy this book. I have several underlying conditions so, along with the enjoyment of the story, I have learned how to relay my symptoms to my doctors in order to facilitate diagnosis and treatment.

Historia
In these 10 eye-opening lectures by a practicing doctor and medical educator, you’ll walk through a series of medical mystery cases ripped from history and involving well-known historical figures whose identities are nevertheless hidden from you. Every one of these cases requires you to use your detective skills to identify and diagnose the mystery patient just like the doctors that attended them. In the process, you’ll learn fascinating insights into medicine: both the medicine that was practiced thousands of years ago and the medicine doctors practice today.

A medical detective for a while
Revisado: 07-24-21
Not too technical, walking the reader through the logic of history-taking, exam and diagnosis, this was a fun exercise. Very well narrated too. Now on to the second volume.

Billy Crystal is 65, and he's not happy about it. With his trademark wit and heart, he outlines the absurdities and challenges that come with growing old, from insomnia to memory loss to leaving dinners with half your meal on your shirt. In humorous chapters like "Buying the Plot" and "Nodding Off," Crystal not only catalogues his physical gripes, but offers a road map to his 77 million fellow baby boomers who are arriving at this milestone age with him. He also looks back at the most powerful and memorable moments of his long and storied life.

Billy Crystal knows how to elicit smiles and laughs as he describes everyday life. He has mastered the art of comedy using tasteful jokes rather than resorting to crass observations or worse, put downs of various people or groups or people. I will purchase more books by Mr. C.

Historia
Recalling remarkable cases - and people - from a career launched in the first days of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Paul Seward leads us in his memoir through suspenseful diagnoses and explorations of anatomy. Within the conditions of great stress and rapid decision-making that are routine in the ER, Dr. Seward tells us that medical staff must be more than technicians of the body: They must be restorers of the human.

Enjoyable and informative
Revisado: 06-26-21
I enjoy medical stories of one sort or another. This one, based on Dr. Seward’s experiences, helped me better understand what happens in the ER and some of the thinking behind the decisions made there. There is just the right balance between lighter and more serious notes throughout the book, making it enjoyable to read. The narrator was great. I would easily listen to another book narrated by him.

Historia
Sometimes in medicine the only way to know what is truly going on in a patient is to operate, to look inside with one's own eyes. This audio is exploratory surgery on medicine itself, laying bare a science not in its idealized form, but as it actually is - complicated, perplexing, and profoundly human. Atul Gawande offers an unflinching view from the scalpel's edge, where science is ambiguous, information is limited, the stakes are high. In dramatic and revealing stories of patients and doctors, he explores how deadly mistakes occur and why good surgeons go bad.

Thank you for helping me understand the many decisions that have to be made in medicine and how they can be made. I found it fascinating. The history of doctor patient relations was interesting, although I prefer the more collaborative note used these days. In the formula or decision tree leading to a recommended course of action, I think there should be some allowance for the patients expectations and wishes. For instance, don’t let me die. Amputate if necessary. Obviously, that statement should be weighed as well. Anyway, I highly recommend the book to patients and doctors.

Funny while still being touching
Revisado: 12-08-20
I enjoyed this book. With Shawn, the author, being a comedian, he is able to relate his story with a sense of humour. Yet, the book is both educational and inspiring as Shawn tells us how he had to adjust to his new limitations. This book would not have been the same without Shawn narrating it. He did a great job!

The struggle to perform well is universal: each one of us faces fatigue, limited resources, and imperfect abilities in whatever we do. But nowhere is this drive to do better more important than in medicine, where lives are on the line with every decision. In this book, Atul Gawande explores how doctors strive to close the gap between best intentions and best performance in the face of obstacles that sometimes seem insurmountable.
