Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Relatable Content for Ex-Fundy Escapees
Revisado: 02-12-24
As someone who left behind a fundamentalist evangelical upbringing, this memoir is relatable in ways that, though painful, help me feel seen. If you have ever gone through the long leaving of an abusive (any kind of abuse—emotional, sexual, physical, financial, etc.) relationship or community, following Tara through the final third of the book feels like watching one’s own slow unraveling of the situation until the reality of the situation stands before you, undeniably butt naked.
Tara’s descriptions of how it felt to enter the larger world knowing so little of its history or how things like test-taking, doctors, or grant applications worked hit for me. It’s the first time in writing I’ve found someone affirming the utter lostness I felt (and still sometimes feel) upon emerging into a world I knew so little about and yet because of my age was supposed to have a sense of mastery for navigating.
Thanks, Tara. I see you.

Historia
Journalist Simone Stolzoff traces how work has come to dominate Americans’ lives—and why we find it so difficult to let go. Based on groundbreaking reporting and interviews with Michelin star chefs, Wall Street bankers, overwhelmed teachers and other workers across the American economy, Stolzoff exposes what we lose when we expect work to be more than a job. Rather than treat work as a calling or a dream, he asks what it would take to reframe work as a part of life rather than the entirety of our lives. What does it mean for a job to be good enough?

One of the Most Valuable Books of my Lifetime
Revisado: 06-17-23
Stolzoff articulates thoughts I’ve been mulling for almost a decade and a half as I’ve ground my way through school, work, more school, ladder climbing and prestige accumulation… only to find myself overworked, underpaid, and feeling one dimensional about my life. In the arts there is a tendency to over-identify with our art and art making as our whole identity. I’ve never felt comfortable with that and now I better understand why. As I make critical decisions about next steps, I’m no longer framing them as career choices only. I want to be making choices around creating a more diverse life and therefore a more diverse identity, instead of continuing to chase the prestige economy. It’s uncomfortable to recognize my addiction to and identity limited within achievement. But the first step is to recognize there is a problem… so here goes.

In this book, Vanderkam reveals the seven counter-intuitive principles the most time-free people have adopted. She teaches mindset shifts to help you feel calm on the busiest days and tools to help you get more done without feeling overwhelmed. The strategies in this book can help if your life feels out of control, but they can also help if you want to take your career, your relationships, and your personal happiness to the next level. Vanderkam has packed this book with insights from busy yet relaxed professionals, including "time makeovers" of people learning how to use these tools.

Practical and Pleasurable
Revisado: 10-15-22
Vandercam weaves practical strategies and thought-provoking questions with anecdotes that help concepts stick. The anecdotes provide context, which seems to matter for my brain. I also appreciate that she included a working artist as one of her anecdotal examples. I haven’t found much in the way of realistic advice for artists in the time management sphere.

Historia
No one at the library she worked at knew about Kristy Cooper's other job. On the surface, it seem that being a librarian and a stripper are polar opposite jobs, but in practice, Kristy found that they were not nearly as different as most people would think. Strip club customers and library patrons both produce wild stories, and you have to be good at working with people in both professions (whether your clothes are off or not).

The story outweighs the poor editing
Revisado: 08-10-22
Pros: true stories and a relatable struggle with student debt. I also appreciate that the author speaks to the reality of the struggles of student debt and how her grad program failed to be worth the time, money, and effort. I value her clarity regarding both the privileges and disadvantages of her positionality.
Cons: the not-so-great audio editing is a disservice to the story. The narrator mispronounces/swaps words a couple of times. Would be curious about ways to weave the activism work more deeply into the story as now it reads as a bit tangential or as an afterthought.

Historia
Think you want to be a stripper? This audiobook was written with you in mind. Having over 20 years’ experience as an exotic dancer, I offer my advice and opinions on the industry. I entered the business at 18 with almost no guidance at all and have somehow managed to make it through with most of my sanity. I hope to shed some light on the industry and help the future generation of ass shakers do the same.

Ok, but some content and editing issues
Revisado: 08-04-22
The writing is fine as is the performance. Erin is blunt and informative. I dropped only three stars because the editing needs a redo (there are a number of places where the story cuts mid word) and because of how the author denigrates fat people and patrons with disabilities.

Historia
Exercise is health-enhancing and life-extending, yet many of us feel it's a chore. But as Kelly McGonigal reveals, it doesn't have to be. Movement can and should be a source of joy. Through her trademark blend of science and storytelling, McGonigal draws on insights from neuroscience, psychology, anthropology, and evolutionary biology, as well as memoirs, ethnographies, and philosophers. She shows how movement is intertwined with some of the most basic human joys, including self-expression, social connection, and mastery.

I always wondered why Movement and exercise in conjunction with my gym community and dance classmates felt like cornerstone habits in my life. This book is giving me the boost I need to make time for those things again despite the overwhelming intensity of graduate school.

Historia
Women have been making strides towards equality for decades, or so we’re often told. They’ve been increasingly entering male-dominated areas of the workforce and consistently surpassing their male peers in grades, university attendance, and degrees. They’ve recently stormed the political arena with a vengeance. But despite all of this, the payoff is—quite literally—not there: the gender pay gap has held steady at about 20% since 2000. And the number of female CEOs for Fortune 500 companies has actually been declining.

Tough truths I’d rather know now (or, a DIY guide to building your own Trojan horse)
Revisado: 01-17-22
As a young woman in the workplace this books rings painfully true. As much as I appreciated the validating stories and examples of gender discrimination, it still took me a bit to come to terms with the fact that this IS the world I live in. But! I am grateful for Vanek Smith’s practical guide on how to face down gender discrimination and move forward anyway. At least now I know how to build my Trojan horse.
