Historia
By turns a family drama and an action-adventure story, The Age of Daredevils chronicles the lives of the men and women who devoted themselves to the extraordinary sport of jumping over Niagara Falls in a barrel - a death-defying gamble that proved a powerful temptation to a hardy few. Internationally known in the 1920s and '30s for their barrel-jumping exploits, the Hills were a father-son team of daredevils who also rescued dozens of misguided thrill seekers and accident victims who followed them into the river.

3 for 3

3 for 3. Great reading. Great story. Well written. Not just the dry facts and dates, but a story filled with action and dialogue. I wondered at the start how the author could have so much information about what the participants were thinking, and about personal conversations, but as the story unfolds it becomes apparent that a tremendous amout of research and personal interviews were done to get the story. Loved the book, makes me want to visit Niagara Falls again with a fresh perspective.

Historia
With the end of the Civil War, the nation recommenced its expansion onto traditional Indian tribal lands, setting off a wide-ranging conflict that would last more than three decades. In an exploration of the wars and negotiations that destroyed tribal ways of life even as they made possible the emergence of the modern United States, Peter Cozzens gives us both sides in comprehensive and singularly intimate detail.

The rest of the story.

I read "Bury my heart at wounded knee" back in 1972 and thought it was a great book. This book tells a similar story, but in a more balanced way. Neither side is covered with glory, but in the end the Native American comes off looking like the victim of a great injustice. What is to be done about it now only God can figure out. This is an age old man made problem that is beyond the ability of man to fix. Variations on this theme have continued, and will continue throughout human history, because " man has dominated man to his harm. (Ecclesiastes 8:9)
I am going to have to review parts of Bury my heart at wounded knee again to refresh my memory, but it seems that this book is much richer in detail, and goes further into motivation on both sides, than the older book. It may be that more original source material is available now. Probably each author is coming at the story from a different angle.
All told I think " The earth is weeping" is the superior book, although I enjoyed both of them immensely.

Historia
The Queen of Great Britain and Ireland for 63 years, Queen Victoria’s life was one of magnificent proportions. Victoria’s childhood was difficult and lonely, but from the time she took the throne aged just 18, she blossomed into a powerful woman, both frivolous and formidable. In her later years, Victoria struggled to find balance between her wish to live a very private life as a widow and her duty to live the very public life of a queen and later empress.
