Story and performance were great
Revisado: 08-24-21
I don’t know why they added generic sound effects. They detracted from the story every time.
The book itself was great and David Tennant’s reading couldn’t be better.

Great return to Panamindorah
Revisado: 12-07-19
I’m very much enjoying the continuing returns to Panamindorah, but I’m not looking for detailed sex scenes. The stories are all very well written and I didn’t actually want to skip the stories with sex scenes since I couldn’t miss how it ends, but I don’t think they are actually my style.

Historia
Millions of words have poured forth about man's trip to the moon, but until now few people have had a sense of the most engrossing side of the adventure: namely, what went on in the minds of the astronauts themselves - in space, on the moon, and even during certain odysseys on earth. It is this, the inner life of the astronauts, that Tom Wolfe describes with his almost uncanny empathetic powers that made The Right Stuff a classic.

Great personality history
Revisado: 10-08-19
I really enjoyed this book and don’t know why I didn’t read it years ago. Having it as an audiobook was great. Dennis Quaid did a great job with the various celebrity voices, but I was disappointed that he didn’t pronounce “fresnel” correctly (the “s” is silent). Still, it was a wonderful book and I will return to it again in a few years.

Historia
Seven years after the events in Hunters Unlucky, Sauny is leading her own small herd of ferryshaft with Valla as her second in command. When a creasia from Treace's old clutter carries away a live foal, Sauny and Valla chase after him through the arid wastes and slot canyons of the southern mountains. Their task seems relatively straightforward. However, dark secrets lurk in those hills, and the price of rescuing one foal may be higher than anyone imagined.

Unexpected return to Lydian
Revisado: 08-04-18
This was only the second return to the island of Lydian from Hunters Unlucky and tells the story of two major side characters that were still kids at the end of the novel. They have grown up and are now facing adult problems.
From that description, I wasn’t sure I’d be interested in the story, but I was quickly drawn in to the action and adventure that are hallmarks of Ms. Hilton’s writing and the reason I know that I will always enjoy it. Again she doesn’t disappoint.
Just as with Hunters Unlucky, I look forward to sharing this with my kids who I’m sure will enjoy it with me.

Great children’s horror
Revisado: 06-11-18
I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but children’s horror is a legitimate genre that is underserved. Think of Secret of NIMH or Coraline, where there is real danger for the characters, but no “adult” content. I’ve been reading the first two books to my kids since they were 3 or 4 and Rush Outfield continues to provide amazing voices to characters that I truly love. The additional 4 stories were also very good. I’m not sure they I love the final story, but I can appreciate how it was done to tie the series closed. All in all a great family story time book.

Fun return to Panamindorah
Revisado: 04-11-18
This is a fun series of short stories that tie back to the characters of the Guild of the Cowry Catchers. While Silvio is the general fan favorite, I really enjoyed Sky Dance, featuring Thessalyn, and Gwain’s short story whose title is escaping me.
I did not appreciate the audio effect on Norm Sherman’s voice for young Silvio in Professionals, but that is a great story and I was able to get past it. I think the only jarring part is that the various stories bounce between full cast and solo read.
I did very much enjoy the audio effects and music in all of the stories. It was just enough to be engaging without overwhelming the reading.
In the end, well worth your time.

Great read and reading
Revisado: 10-05-17
I have been a fan of Abigail Hilton's Panamindorah works for some time now and this installment does not disappoint.
I think this would be a great book on it's own, but it's even better as a congregate sequel to both the Guild of the Cowry Catchers series and the first Refugees novel, The Scarlet Albatross.
I appreciated that the characters and plot are not always predictable and that makes rereading it so much more rewarding.
Highly recommended.

In this collection of short stories from the world of Panamindorah, Silveo meets Basil, Silas meets Percy, Anaroo meets Gwain, Gus meets Silas, and Gerard prepares to meet Thessalyn. Dakar and Theseus are tiny children, caught up in the machinations of others; Glossy makes impossibly difficult decisions for herself and her child; and Marlie struggles with the ghosts of her past and present. All of them will find their places in the world, often far from where they started. For the moment, however, they are doing everything for the first time.

Good fun in short stories
Revisado: 06-24-17
It was very nice to get a slice of life of several characters from various books that I enjoy. I really enjoy this author and these narrators, but the transition between stories is surprisingly jarring. I didn't really get much out of the author's notes after each story, but I already knew where all of the characters came from. I did enjoy the stories and I will listen to them again.

Fun romp back in Lydia
Revisado: 05-21-17
Where does Awake rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is a short story, so it isn't fair to compare it to a novel. This was a fun story that I will listen to again in a year or so when I want a quick return to Lydia.
What other book might you compare Awake to and why?
This story has hints of Narnia and Watership Down, and hints of Percy Jackson and Harry Potter. It is a world with unique magic and mythology, but that isn't what keeps drawing me back. It's the characters that drive the stories and that's what pulls you back.
Have you listened to any of Rish Outfield’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Rish's performance is superb, as always. Each species has its own accent and each character their own voice. Add to that amazing narration and it is a joy to listen to.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Towards the end, when a character had a revelation with respect to another character.
Any additional comments?
The only bad thing I'd say about this story is that it assumes that I remember all of the side characters from Hunters Unlucky without providing much of any context. Most of them I eventually figured out, but the story suffers some from not spending a small amount of time on reintroducing the side characters.

Great performance of a great book
Revisado: 06-15-16
This book is by one of my favorite authors and read by some of my favorite podcasters and it does not disappoint on either front.
Taking place in a closed environment, it would seem to be at risk of being formulaic or predictable. This couldn't be further from the case and is a wonderful book.
