The narrator completely ruined it

Let me preface this by stating that I LOVE Shelly Laurenston. I've listened to the entire Pride series as well as Call of the Crows on Audible, and this is the FIRST of her books where the narrator completely ruined the entire book for me. Her inability to differentiate between characters and the fact that her male characters, especially the hero sounds like a nasely and weak, dork. Ugh!! It took me forever to get through this book, when normally I binge listen her books. And lets not even get started how the guy on the cover doesn't even match the description of what Will is supposed to look like *face palm*

Narrator aside, this was a decent continuation of Laurenston's Crow series. You have the wit and action of her feisty, kick @ss Crows and the signature humor that I love about Laurenston.

First let me clarify that I LOVE Sebastian York. He's one of my favorite narrators and he truly makes a book. That being said, it's not his fault. It was the story, Sunny in particular, that make this story absolutely painful to listen to. I wanted to reach through the speakers of my car and smack her upside the head. Where in the pervious book, you find yourself thinking that Miller is the ultimate player and total d*ck. But once you start listening to the story and come to absolutely adore him. Yes he makes some mistakes, but then there's Sunny. Sunny needs to grow the fluff up and grow her own set of balls and think for herself. I HATED this story because of her. I found her character totally immature, and unable to think for herself. Maybe she'll grow in the rest of the series, but I'm definitely not a fan.

The narrator- her voice is- ugh! Its so deep and emotionless, this is what I imagine a female sociopath would sound like. I was beyond excited for Becky and Boss's story and that it was part of the romance package, I couldnt wait to listen. But her voice ruined it for me within first 5 minutes. Her voice is not appropriate for this series. I had to stop listening, after chapter 1 and go buy the actual book.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No. Though I enjoy Ms. Moriarty's stories, the narrator does an incredibly poor job using different voices, especially when it switches characters during the same chapter. It would be easier to follow if one chapter was done in one perspective, the other perspective another chapter. But the fact that Ms. Smith's voice DOES NOT DIFFERENTIATE between perspectives makes the story incredibly annoying and hard to follow. What aggravates me even more is that due to my work schedule and my 2 hour commute every day, this is really my only option to "read" books.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Tamara Lovatt Smith?

ANYONE WHO CAN DO DIFFERENT VOICES!!!!!!!!!!! Ms. Moriarty, please do yourself a favor and get yourself another narrator.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I think if I had read the physical book, I would have had a much better time following the story. I love Holder Graham's voice, but I feel like his accents were all over in this book, and some of the conversations were so thick I couldn't understand a word he was saying. Not only that there were so many flash backs you kinda got lost with all the new additional characters and how their story interconnected with the present characters. I felt like I should have been taking notes just to follow how everyone fit together...which is hard to do when you're driving down the high way. I like the complexity, it's just hard to follow when you can't easily go back and reread something.

Would you be willing to try another book from Sherrilyn Kenyon? Why or why not?

Despite the fact that I felt like my head was spinning with the storyline, I'm hooked to Kenyon's books. And since I have a 2 hour commute, 5 days a week, I'm also going to continue to listen to the audio books instead of picking up a physical book. I love the sarcasm and wit in the CON books. It's a nice break in pace from her paranormal romance, which they all seem to follow the same formula. After the first 5 books, it gets old.

What about Holter Graham’s performance did you like?

I have to give him credit for the cajun and welsh accents- even though they were hard to follow (which was the point, I get, but not having the physical book, I wish I could go back and read it). Other than that, I love his voice, and he's one of my favorite male readers.

A couple other reviews had made the complaint that the narrator does not differentiate between voices. They're absolutely right. There are 3 points of views- Alice's, Elisabeth's and Frannie's. Because the narrator doesn't use a distinct voice for each point of view, it's sometimes hard to know when she goes back to telling the present story- Alice's.

However, despite that, this is a great story. It reminded me a bit of Sophie Kinsella's Remeber Me? But I think that's what drew me to the story, and why I enjoyed it so much.

Can you imagine having a fall at the gym and waking up, only to have lost 10 years of your memory? That's exactly what happens to Alice. Despite not remembering her 3 children, it almost gives her a do over as a mother and wife.

I love The Black Dagger Brotherhood, but the past couple books have been just blah. I felt the need to read this out of loyalty to the characters and authors. I had so little interest in The Shadows, I was kinda ready to give up on The Brothers. I am happy to say, JR Ward is back on her game, the story more focused on The brothers, albeit Butch and Marisa and the newly forming relationship between Paradise and Craig. The story focuses on the newly reformed training program with a side story developing into Butch's past and Marisa's involvement with Safe Place. I feel like Ward is finally taking the story back to its origins, delving into the everyday life of the brotherhood, now that everyone's story has been told. I'm actually looking forward to The Beast after finishing this book, and my love for the brotherhood has been renewed.

Good story, bad performance. When the performer read a characters thoughts in "their" voice, I couldn't tell if that character was actually speaking or thinking. It would have been better if the performer read their thoughts in her normal voice instead of the character's.

I did enjoy the overall story, but I don't think I can listen to the next book. I'll be reading it instead.

I really enjoyed this story until she started talking about Macs military service. Marines ARE NOT soldiers and wouldn't be caught dead telling them to soldier up. She kept using soldier and Marine interchangeably and I drove me freaking nuts. And Marines stationed at Fr Carson?? Hello that's an ARMY base- I've spent a lot of time there. I think in this day and age if you're going to reference our current military at least do a little research and get it right

I started this series on a pure whim and I'm sooooo glad I did. I love SK'a The League and Dark Hunters and she didn't disappoint with Chronicles of Nick. When I started to listed via audio books I was so relieved the narrators voice didn't creep me out, which occasionally happens with audio books. Cannot wait for the next book!
