If you could sum up I Am Half-Sick of Shadows in three words, what would they be?

Cozy detectective tale... told from the point of view a very advanced youngster of a detective. We like this series a great deal. The story this time around may not have quite as gripping as say the first but it's a very comfortable world if you've visited before and the reader is entirely right for the story.

A genuine Bargain

In simple terms this is a reincarnation tale of one part the Time Travelers wife and one part Groundhog's Day but still manages to go it's own way. It extends the fantasy of IF "I knew then what I know now" AND had the opportunity to relive your life several times.
A very satisfying book. The narrator is good with the lead character if a little weak with some of the female voices but not enough to get in the way of the tale.
I'd picked this one up in an earlier sale and it is still priced pretty reasonably. A real bargain. Enjoy, I suspect I will listen to this one again.

Good tale told poorly

I picked this one up because the early buzz on the book had been very strong. I did sample the reading but only briefly. In short, the plot moves quickly in the somewhat usual dystopian way but if your not a fan of 'the grid' the book works. This reading doesn't. The story calls for various accents - all done tragically bad. The tale does pull you through but buyer beware. The author should sue.

Slow maybe, hard and majestic for sure

Some of the other reviews took me aback but then I realized that I've read or listened to the entire Robicheaux series. So I didn't have any trouble following the plot. If I step back a bit, I guess this one may not have the speed of a MTV video but it's not suppose to. What the book has is all the seedy majesty of New Orleans and the sensuousness of the Cajun South. Burk can write about food or the weather and it's as sensual as most folks writing about sex! He's just plain brilliant. They call him the 'Faulkner of Crime' which is great, as long as, no one tries to lock up his charatcers in some some kind of lit. crit. vault because they are just too juicey. So yeah, The price of admission may be a slightly slower tale but it is well worth the time.

As to Mr. Hammer's reading, I have to say it was a slight adjustment. But I have to also add that after a recent trip to Louisana, he sounds about right - especially for the main character. I would hope in later novels that he might separate his characters' voices a bit more. Having listen to a bit of audio, the female characters are a little weak. But if Streak and Clete are right, it really is worth the price of a month's subscription.

Like one of the earlier listeners, it's great to have this series in an unabriged recording. I would defintely vote with my wallet for, the earlier books especially, to be redone without abridgement.

Well done

A wonderful recreation of Amsterdam and its first taste of coffee. Also an incredible introduction to how business was conducted in the 17th Century. The narrator had the perfect tone for the tale even if each character might have been somewhat better drawn vocally.
I agree with the earlier reviewer that it is a fairly good abridgement but the book really does such a suberb portrait of the details of the time, that it would have been nice to see this one done as an unabridged recording. BUT it still works extremely well as is. I guess like any good work, it left me wanting more.
