Historia
A mesmerizing, moving, and elegantly written debut novel, The Language of Flowers beautifully weaves past and present, creating a vivid portrait of an unforgettable woman whose gift for flowers helps her change the lives of others even as she struggles to overcome her own troubled past. The Victorian language of flowers was used to convey romantic expressions: honeysuckle for devotion, asters for patience, and red roses for love. But for Victoria Jones, it's been more useful in communicating grief, mistrust, and solitude.

Predictable and unrealistic. Juvenile.
Revisado: 10-19-24
Three chapters in I wrote down what would happen the rest of the book and was right. Very unrealistic and the character development was definitely not believable or consistent.

Historia
When the Knight Bus crashes through the darkness and screeches to a halt in front of him, it's the start of another far from ordinary year at Hogwarts for Harry Potter. Sirius Black, escaped mass-murderer and follower of Lord Voldemort, is on the run - and they say he is coming after Harry. In his first ever Divination class, Professor Trelawney sees an omen of death in Harry's tea leaves... But perhaps most terrifying of all are the Dementors patrolling the school grounds, with their soul-sucking kiss...

Jim Dale is a master!
Revisado: 07-24-23
Jim Dale could read instruction manuals in a dead language and it would be entertaining. The marriage of this legendary series and his own brand of magic makes it incredible. Love!

Historia
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease.

Misleading
Revisado: 05-09-20
I bought this book thinking that it would be entirely about the great influenza - ya know. Like the title implies. There were some chapters in there about the influenza epidemic itself. However, the bulk of this work is a combination of dry medical science history & political environment. While obviously necessary angles of the story, these subjects far outweighed the period of the actual pandemic. Whole countries and their experiences with the influenza were breezed over in mere paragraphs. In contrast, I became intimately acquainted with the feelings and desires of medical scientists decades after the pandemic was over. It was pretty disappointing.

Historia
In 1979, a secret unit was established by the most gifted minds within the US Army. Defying all known accepted military practice - and indeed, the laws of physics - they believed that a soldier could adopt the cloak of invisibility, pass cleanly through walls and, perhaps most chillingly, kill goats just by staring at them. Entrusted with defending America from all known adversaries, they were the First Earth Battalion. And they really weren't joking. What's more, they're back and fighting the War on Terror.

Intriguing but overall just nutty and a little boring. Trying to give credence to completely bonkers stories.

Can’t express how awful this book is
Revisado: 09-25-18
Sugar sweet and completely predictable. Devoid of substance and constantly projecting modern thoughts/processes onto a different era. This book is for people who don’t like Romeo & Juliet because it’s too sad. The narrator was terrible, too - it was like having
Show white read. Lots of high-pitched voices. I don’t give up on a book once I start it - call it OCD - but I eye-rolled and exasperated sighed my way through this whole thing.

Historia
Spanning eras and cultures from ancient Rome to medieval England to 1950s Hollywood, Jennifer Wright's It Ended Badly guides you through the worst of the worst in historically bad breakups. In the throes of heartbreak, Emperor Nero had just about everyone he ever loved - from his old tutor to most of his friends - put to death. Oscar Wilde's lover, whom he went to jail for, abandoned him when faced with being cut off financially from his wealthy family.

Overall good but lots of projection
Revisado: 09-20-18
Interesting stories that will be fun to read more about. However, I felt like the author went off into the weeds with her own opinions and projections onto historical figures quite a bit. Overall a fun read but skip the super-sappy yay for love epilogue.
