Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

A real account of one man's break with the mentality that keeps people in poverty.
Revisado: 08-02-24
This is a concise, honest account of Vance's experience growing up in a family characterized by its various members' struggles with the forces of poverty, addiction, and poor white trash culture. In my opinion, it's a story with messages and lessons that transcend the "hillbilly" experience. His successful navigation past the many traps that keep people stuck in impoverished misery can be an example to anyone struggling against dysfunctional mindsets in their family and community.

Historia
Highliners are the elite of the fishing world, the skippers and crews who make the biggest catches—salmon, king crab, halibut, shrimp—and deliver them first to the bustling canneries of Kodiak and Dutch Harbor. For these men—and for their women—the safe eight-hour day does not exist. It never will. Some fishermen get rich, many die broke. But they find a special joy in their work that can never be matched by the easier world of the landsman.

What a roller coaster ride!
Revisado: 08-18-21
Story packs in a ton of fisheries and things that can go wrong on the water. As an Alaskan some of the mispronounced place names made me wince which is why I gave 4 stars on performance. Otherwise very well read. Also things have changed quite a lot in Dutch Harbor and Kodiak since the 1970s, so this is definitely historical fiction, but a great way of getting to know how things were when the council management system was put in place. Would recommend!

Historia
The mining certificates granting ownership of the Christabel mine that Edward Dugan inherited from his father had a face value of $250,000, but the mine itself had been declared worthless. Still, Henry Christian, the man that had sold them to Dugan's father, said he'd buy them back for $1,500.
Penniless, Dugan decided to walk the 3,000 miles from his home in Boston to the mine in the Southwest to check out the offer. But along the way he meets a travel companion named Red. Red knows Christian by reputation, and by another name: Bonanza Chris.

A great yarn
Revisado: 05-14-21
As is often the case for Brand, the hero in this story is honest, physically powerful, and thought of as a fool by others. But the narrator is definitely not any of those things and this has more humor in it than any book I’ve read by Max Brand.

Historia
In 1842, following the doctor's orders for a change of climate, William Thomas Hamilton found himself accompanying a party of trappers on a yearlong expedition. Heading into the wild, Hamilton would prove himself to be a fast learner, as adept with a firearm as with sign language: this early experience would be the making of him. As the 19th century progressed, along with many other trappers, Hamilton found himself drawn into the Indian Wars brought about by territorial expansion.

Unabridged and unvarnished
Revisado: 03-11-21
This was interesting and made me aware that I do very much prefer these historical stories/accounts in the original and unapologetically biased language of the time. It’s so much more instructive of how different the view of the world was then than what one finds in modern descriptions. This most definitely is a window to the mindset of the white men who pursued uncertain lives on the western frontier as trappers, explorers, and either friends or enemies of Indians as circumstances determined.
Great job by the narrator.

Historia
Wilder's stories consistently explored the connections between the commonplace and cosmic dimensions of human experience, always returning to fundamental questions about the meaning of life. This Pulitzer Prize-winning tale concerns the lives of five people who fall to their deaths from a Peruvian rope bridge in 1714. A humble Franciscan, Brother Juniper, witnesses the accident and determines to learn about the lives of the victims in order to find out whether this accident happened by chance or by plan.

A beautiful, fearless examination of life.
Revisado: 04-15-18
This story is a pleasure to listen to because it is written so well. The author reveals the souls of the characters in a way that is uncontrived and effortless. Sam Waterston reads this beautiful work in an understated way so that he never gets in the way of it. Highly recommend!
