Reading very mechanical. Basically a short general overview of German history from spring 1945 to 1989– mostly but not completely accurate account. Not a ton of information on Stasi. Numerous German names/terms mispronounced. Short but still not worth the time.

Historia
In the summer of 1941, Hitler ruled Europe from the Atlantic to the Black Sea. Britain was struggling to combat his powerful propaganda machine, crowing victory and smearing his enemies as liars and manipulators over his frequent radio speeches, blasted out on loudspeakers and into homes. British claims that Hitler was dangerous had little impact against this wave of disinformation. Except for the broadcasts of someone called Der Chef, a German who questioned Nazi doctrine, and most importantly, a character created by the British propagandist Thomas Sefton Delmer, a unique weapon in the war.

Engaging and informative

Pomerantzev never disappoints! The book skillfully blends historical research on the life of Sefton Delmer, Pomerantsev’s own autobiographical experiences and insights for today’s information battles.

Historia
Coexisting but conflicting needs create self-sabotaging behaviors. This is why we resist efforts to change, often until they feel completely futile. But by extracting crucial insight from our most damaging habits, building emotional intelligence by better understanding our brains and bodies, releasing past experiences at a cellular level, and learning to act as our highest potential future selves, we can step out of our own way and into our potential.

Full of contradictions

If you like Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In, you might like this somewhat. Highly individualistic and unrealistic! For example, there is an extended discussion of if you don’t like where you live, it’s just YOU (and your fears) keeping you from moving—- What?! For those of us without a large trust fund, and hoping to preserve a healthy marriage, it’s a bit more complicated than that. There are a few tidbits of useful wisdom, but then again if you throw every cliche out there, one or two are bound to stick. “Don’t overthink things”— followed by advice to plan ahead and think through every possible scenario. “Inner peace is accepting that most things in life are beyond our control “ but “if you aren’t where you want to be, you are what’s holding you back.” “Embrace discomfort” as an opportunity for change but also seek inner peace. Etc etc
I ordered the book by accident but slugged through it on principle—regret the waste of time and money.

Historia
Think of The War of Art as tough love...for yourself. Since 2002, The War of Art has inspired people around the world to defeat "resistance"; to recognize and knock down dream-blocking barriers and to silence the naysayers within us. Resistance kicks everyone's butt, and the desire to defeat it is equally as universal. The War of Art identifies the enemy that every one of us must face, outlines a battle plan to conquer this internal foe, then pinpoints just how to achieve the greatest success.

Irritating and only mildly helpful
Revisado: 09-04-23
I downloaded the book after it was mentioned by another author I enjoyed. I persisted in listening even after the infuriating assessment that caring for children is a job reserved for mothers. Later in the book in an extended metaphor, the male author also claimed to understand what mothers feel when giving birth. Much of the early advice also parallels that of “Lean In”, which even its author Sheryl Sandberg has since admitted is flawed. The author admits to basing the book on his personal experience and creative struggles. Fine, but then he should refrain from using metaphors beyond his own experience. Add to that the cheesy music clips from Flight of the Valkyries, and various well-worn platitudes. If you can make it that far, you’ll find about 40% of the book somewhat useful or inspiring.
