Now, that virus is evolving, creating an army of mutants and monsters, mixing Earth genetics with something...not Earth. Bad narrator, boring story.
Revisado: 09-03-24
I tried it was too hard to get an in to. An hour in and I just couldn’t have cared less about what happened next. The narrator read every emotion, gender and voice the same. It was not for me.

It’s the summer of 1883. A severe drought threatens to bankrupt the Ridgeway’s Rocking R Ranch and every rancher in northwest Texas. The cattle are thirsty and hungry. The ranchers are getting desperate. And a simple new invention called barbed wire—the devil’s rope—is their only defense against illegal herders grazing on their land. Percy Ridgeway and his brother Eli are working overtime to stake a fence around their sixty thousand acres. But someone keeps cutting the wires.

If you like the wild west, you will love this book
Revisado: 03-10-23
This is the second book in the series and I recommend listening to them in order. You wouldn't have to but this book is a much richer experience if you read them chronologically. So much of what happens to the characters from book 1 really shapes who they are in book 2. It adds much more depth to the story and further bonds you to and makes you more invested in what happens to the characters you've come to love from book 1.
This a great western, it has touches of real documented history, barbed wire AKA the devil's rope was a real issue that impacted life in the old west and created hostilities among competing farmers. This book could seem slow, but the story does keep you engrossed as long you are as bonded to the characters as I was.
The narrator was excellent, he definitely helped make this a great listening experience.

Great follow-up to Bull Mountain
Revisado: 12-23-22
At the end of Bull Mountain, you'd think that with such a nice and tidy story like that, there wouldn't be enough meat left on the bone to create a whole new story from the leftovers -but there sure is. This book fills out the history of Bull Mountain and its characters. There is a great twist at the end of this book that really stepped it up a notch. All in all, I would feel confident saying that if you enjoyed Bull Mountain, you will enjoy Like Lions. It really buttons up the story of Clayton and all the Burroughs quite nicely.

That was VERY disappointing.
Revisado: 12-20-22
I love Barry Eisler. I have all of his previous novels and short stories in my library, and Dox is by far my favorite character, so it was a huge disappointment when this book sucked. I look forward to this book for months and it was just boring and the story was very basic and elementary for an Eisler novel. It lacked the depth and intrigue he usually has in abundance. Two thumbs down on this one.

There's no way this was written by Don Winslow
Revisado: 05-20-22
I love Don Winslow, I have read/listened to every Don Winslow book and this is simply not on the same level. This book drones on and on about nothing and there are so many characters it's annoying to try and follow. It's really a boring story, laced with moments of violence, that I usually can't tell why it's happening or whose doing what to who. None of this is helped by the narrator who has an uncanny ability to make every character sound the same, even the women sound like the men so during exchanges between multiple characters it's terrible to try and follow. Needless to say, I miss the artistry of Ray Porter the Day of the Dog cartel trilogy was a masterpiece of writing and performance. This book is just a straight-up disappointment.

Historia
After the loss of his parents, young Jack Thatch first met Stella as a child - this cryptic little girl of eight with dark hair and darker eyes, sitting alone on a bench in the cemetery clutching her favorite book. The body of a man found in an alley, every inch of his flesh horribly burned, yet his clothing completely untouched. For Detective Faustino Brier, this wasn't the first, and he knew it wouldn't be the last. Isolated and locked away from the world in a shadowy lab, a little boy known only as Subject "D" waits, grows, learns. He's permitted to speak to no one.

So boring and way too long
Revisado: 12-03-21
This story was about 10-12 hrs too long, the story may have been better in an abridged format, way too much fluff and redundant themes. I have really loved other JD Barker books and I kept waiting for the moment when this boring tale turned into an event or plot twist that made the long journey worth the ride....and it never came. I'm not ready to give up on JD, as the writing was very good at times. However, the overall experience was very very disappointing.

Revisado: 02-01-20
I love RC Bray, he can bring any story to life. When you combine him with a storytelling and outstanding writing exemplified in these books by Craig DiLouie -you get absolute perfection. This is now one of my all-time favorite series of books. It’s a no-brainer to spend a credit on this series, 1 credit for 29 hours of awesomeness. There is little to no chance you won’t love these books.

Billy Todd has always been different. Most people called him odd, and those were the nice people. Though he was born with a learning disability, Billy's parents never allowed him to consider himself disabled. Raised to be self-sufficient, Billy might not be as smart as some, but he was a lot smarter than people realized.

The Best Protagonist EVER!
Revisado: 09-28-19
I love, love, love Billy Todd. I have never read a book where I have loved the main character more. I wish he was real and I wish I was his friend. I would always feel better when he was around -for those who've read the book ;) Anyway, do yourself a favor and listen to this amazing adventure. It is my favorite PA book I have ever experienced -both story and narration. And at 25 hrs long you get a ton of bang for your buck. The saddest part of this book is the end and I don't mean the story, I mean the book. It is so sad when this book ends because you know your time with Billy and his group is over. I doubt there will be a sequel and that is sad too. I just miss Billy Todd. The story is so well told and it surprised me how little action there was and just how entertained I was without that being necessary. There was action and those scenes are very tense and well done, but you care so much for Billy and his whole group that the tension is ramped up ten fold. I will definitely listen to this book again someday and I have no doubt I will love it all over again. I can't imagine anyone regretting spending the $ or credit on this book.
Christopher Lane was an exceptional narrator and was an excellent choice for this book. He really brought Billy Todd to life. A lot of voices sound the same, but it doesn't matter, the story is so well written that it doesn't get in the way.

An Amazing Finale, to an Amazing Series
Revisado: 09-17-19
This is probably one of the greatest and most complete stories to which I have ever had the privilege of listening. This story has it all drama, suspense, love, lust, hate and above all...insight. This novel/series exemplifies just how difficult the war on drugs truly is to win, or even control in any way. As said in the book you can cut the head off the snake and two will grow back. As long as there is money to be made from drugs, there will always be a war on drugs and no matter the risk, someone will risk it for the immense rewards. And that "someone" will likely be a young person who grew up in the life choosing the drug/cartel life over a life of extreme poverty. As this book details, these are likely the only 2 options most young people have in these poor areas of mexico, which is basically every non-tourist city. It is really sad. I think it also does a good job of showing how a wall, even if it helped, is not a lone solution to the entire problem, Though it may be an important piece of the puzzle to long term security from our southern border, the problem is bigger than any wall. Where there is a will (or money) there is a way. I know the wall has become a point of political contention, but if you could take Trump out of the equation (and the emotions he tends elicit) and just look at the situation facing this country, not only now but in the years to come, I truly think Americans need to think more critically about what the wall represents and what it can do protect (what is currently) the best country on Earth. I heard somebody say once, if you went to the doctor with 10 major ailments and they told you there is no way to cure all 10, however they can fix one of the biggest issues which will pave the way to curing the other 9 ailments -wouldn't you do that procedure??? I know I would. I believe Don Winslow shows examples of how the wall can be a double-edged sword. As someone whose son had a close family friend (who was married to an american and has 3 children all born in the States) that was deported and saw first-hand how devastating it was to all associated with him. So there is certainly no easy answer, this solution is beyond complex but I think it's a problem we need to address so America can to continue to exist and live to fight another day towards a long term and far better solution. But remember, better is rarely better for everybody.
This book is excellent. The story is phenomenal and the writing is superb and the time flies as Ray Porter delivers the story with a smoothness and poise that makes the experience that much better. Excellent book/series all around

Frenemies Who Changed the World is a riotous audio exclusive, like if Monty Python taught your history class. Each volume of four 30-minute histories will dig into the petty name-calling and grumbling grudges that led to many of the world’s greatest advancements, all delivered with a cheeky sense of humor. Choose sides: Cope or Marsh, the jerks who discovered so many dinosaurs; Hamilton or Burr, whose rivalry fueled American politics; and many more....
