Historia
While Augusta Hawke is a successful author of eighteen crime novels, since her husband's death, she's been living vicariously through her Jules Maigret-like detective Claude and his assistant Caroline. Then a handsome police detective appears investigating a real-life mystery. Where are her neighbors, the Normans? No one has a clue what's happened—except Augusta. Although she isn't nosy, spending all day staring out the windows for inspiration means she does notice things. Like the Normans arguing. And that they've been missing a week.

The colorless of the narrator’s voice.
Revisado: 04-05-24
First person doesn’t work. The writer doesn’t inspire me to care about her and her angst or about her characters. Such a disappointment from her Max Tudor novels.

Awful Narrator
Revisado: 03-19-21
I managed to get through the whole book because I am fond of this series. A grade school student learning to read out loud could have done a better job. If she is the chosen narrator for the rest of the series, I won’t be able to listen.

An explosion rocks the foundations of Harvard University’s stately Memorial Hall. Built a century ago to honor alumni who died defending the Union in the Civil War, the hall is a focal point of the campus. Now it is a crime scene. A corpulent body is found inside, decapitated by the blast. The dead man is Hamilton Dow, conductor of the school orchestra and one of the most beloved men on campus. The university’s president, James Cheever, couldn’t be more pleased.

Awful narrator
Revisado: 04-18-20
The narration is truly dreadful. The pacing of the sentences and the mis-pronunciation make it a pain to listen to. While this is not one of Alexanders best books, the narration made it impossible to finish.

Worst Narrator Ever
Revisado: 11-13-19
This is not one of the author’s best books. It’s as if she had a box of unrelated Roman facts and trivia and tried to weave them all into one book. Only because I’m listening to the books in sequence did I endure the egregiously bad narrator. If you’ve identified with Simon Prebble as narrator, prepare to be disappointed. Listen to a sample of this book and you may decide to skip this one.

Too Much History
Revisado: 11-18-18
The author's desire to impress the reader with his vast knowledge of the laws of the period and the contentious relationships with the many varieties of Christianity and the attempt by Rome to be overlord to all Christian communities completely overshadow the plot. I have enjoyed this series in the past but this one just slogged along.

Questionable Narration
Revisado: 05-23-18
The narration of Ms Ward wasn't bad, except when she was speaking Cadfael's voice. The voice she used, supposedly to mimic Welsh speaking, was more reminiscent of Calcutta or Bombay. It was quite annoying. Only the excellence of Ellis Peters' story carried me to the conclusion. I'll make it a point to avoid Ms Ward's narration in the future.
