This book is much more realistic than the movie the searchers with John Wayne. And while the movie has some similar incidents, the ending of the book is quite different. This is one of the best westerns about Texas. I have ever read historically accurate with a engaging story.

This was very interesting, well told, and well read. I really enjoyed Mukiwa, so I read this book. This book is like Orwell’s book Animal Farm but happening in real life. It is sad to see such a nice country run into the ground by pride, greed, and political correctness.

I found this a very interesting glimpse into the history of Zimbabwe as it changed from a colony to civil war to dictatorship. The author saw many events first hand and his descriptions and storytelling were first rate.

I enjoyed the descriptions of the jungle travel and the tribes. It is an enduring unsolved mystery (was there really a lost civilization) and another (what happened to Fawcett).

CS Lewis shares his insights on the book of Psalms

I read this book because I enjoyed the Narnia series by CS Lewis, and his apologetics book Mere Christianity. Lewis has some great quotes in his writing and has a knack for stating profound truths in pithy and memorable ways. One of my favorite quotes of Lewis is, "If Christianity is false it is of no importance, if Christianity is true it is the most important thing in life, what Christianity cannot be is of moderate importance." I have enjoyed the soaring pose in the book of Psalms, it is one of my favorite books in the Bible. I have found the Bible to be a unique book in all of literature in that it is the only book I have ever read that gets more interesting the more you read it. I have read through the Bible chronologically at least 3 times in my life and it never fails to speak to me with new insights and revelation. For this reason I was interested in reading this book as the commentary of a great thinker and communicator (CS Lewis) and his reflections on the Psalms. The book was OK but not as good as I thought it would be. I did find it interesting how Lewis tried to read the Psalms through the eyes of the Hebrews and what the Psalms would have meant in their cultural context. Lewis did not shy away from tackling some of the more morally challenging Psalms and what might have been meant by them. He takes a topical approach where rather than examining the Psalms individually Psalm by Psalm, Lewis takes a topic like "revenge" and bounces through the Psalms picking out lines about the topic. I would have preferred an analysis of each Psalm individually line by line. While there are some thoughtful and interesting insights, I think Psalms should also be read in the context of what they mean in modern Christianity because the Bible claims to be inspired by God and He can speak through people to say things that have relevant meaning in the times we live in today.

The Movie was great - the book is even better!

I read this book because last Friday I went to the movies with my wife and watch the movie "Jesus Revolution" based on the same book. First the movie was entertaining and thought provoking. The cinematography and acting was good. My favorite moment was when the hippies first showed up in the square church and hippie leader/evangelist Lonnie Frisbee blurts out, "my sins man!" The movie had a haunting quality that drove me to read the book. Unlike many Christian movies, "Jesus Revolution" isn't cringy, sappy, predictable, or poorly produced.
In my experience the book is usually better than the movie because the authors can go into more depth about the characters book, their backgrounds, their thoughts, motivations, and the aftermath. This book was no disappointment - it expanded on the movie. It is more entertaining and thought provoking than the movie and adds much depth to the characters and incidents brushed on by the movie. I think there are many parallels between the state of the county in the late 60s and the state of the country today... (racial tensions, economic uncertainty, threat of war, disconnect between the generations, government deception, etc). Then as now the answer won't be found in political power, human wisdom, better economics, the media, education, or any of the other solutions tried and failed. The only answer for our personal and national struggles starts with each of us as individuals. Revival starts with individuals being revived and then coming together to spread that life. FIrst we must be desperate for change, then we must realize that revival must happen to us before it can spread through us. Proverbs 14:34 "Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people." The book and the movie show how God can use flawed, imperfect people to accomplish his will if they are desperate enough to put their trust in Him and obey His word. I firmly believe America is at a fork in the road with only 2 options ... repentance or ruination.

First person experience of a guy on the ground

I read this book because I am a big fan of Wilbur Smith's historical fiction books, especially those dealing with the bush wars and the fight against communist insurgents. This book is a first person view of a foot soldier in the special forces. It doesn't read like a novel with a story arc and the big picture view of what is going on. This is just one guy's recollections of what he saw and experienced as a boots on the ground guy. You see basic training, surviving in the bush, what the fire fights are like, but it is kind of disjointed because it lacks context. It is like sitting with a guy over a beer and he is just telling you a series of stories of things that happened in his life. If you want to know what is going on in the big picture, why the insurgents ultimately took over the country despite the many victories of they guys on the ground, why they were operating undercover in Mozambique, why they were trying to orchestrate a coup in the Transkei, etc, you will be left with many unanswered questions. I suppose this is realistic because in war the guy on the ground doing the fighting is often left in the dark about the ultimate purpose of his orders and is rather just trying to do his duty, follow orders, and get home alive. I found the book interesting but lacking in a story arc to tie the narratives together. I admire the dedication, courage, and toughness of Balaam and his fellows. It seems to me everybody lost, the Europeans and the everyday people of Zimbabwe, and the country itself. Nobody's life is better in Zimbabwe today than it was before the insurgency.
The narration performance of this book is excellent, the accent of the guy matched that which I thought the author would have so it added realism to the listening experience.

This is the first book by Adrian Rogers I have read. I appreciate his simple, no-nonsense approach to topics and his use of understandable and relevant examples. This is the best book on prayer I have ever read. Mr. Rogers goes through the disciples prayer step by step and applies each line as they pertain to issues in our everyday life that we can take before the King of Kings. A memorable line is when Rogers says, "Prayer is the most untapped resource in America." This book is well written, not technical or filled with religious jargon. This book will get you motivated to pray and teach you why it is important to pray and what to pray about. I feel like I know God better after reading this book. I highly recommend. The narration performance is good.

Important Christian Teaching

This is an excellent book on a neglected topic about reality. Everyone has a world view that answers the essential questions of 1- Origins (where do I come from, how did reality come to exist?) 2-Meaning (what is the purpose of my life?) 3-Morality (how do I know what is right and what is wrong?) 4-Destiny (what happens after I die?) A person's answers to these questions affect their outlook on life, guide their motivations and actions throughout life, and determine their destiny. This book is an important contribution to the Christian worldview because as Christians we spend lots of time on morality and purpose but neglect origins and destiny. This book addresses the destiny question and clears up many misunderstandings caused by the church's neglect of teaching in this important area.
People aren't willing to sacrifice in this present fallen world because they have many misunderstandings about what the eternal land of the living is really like. It isn't sitting on a cloud strumming a harp and singing praise songs for eternity. We will have a real body, eat real food, do real projects, visit, see animals, and many other things. The author does a good job of picking through the scriptures to find little hints and nuggets that reveal the truth of what comes next after this life.
To quote CS Lewis
“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”
― C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory, and Other Addresses
This book will get you very excited about heaven and willing to sacrifice now rather than settle for fleeting earthly amusements.
