isekai
Revisado: 07-23-24
If you like isekai you'll probably like this. A girl uses memories from earth to navigate political intrigue and start business ventures in a mostly meritocratic fantasy kingdom. There is little action so you might not like it if you want a lot of fireballs and sword swinging.

A pale shadow of what came before
Revisado: 07-12-24
Maybe I shouldn't compare this to older L5R novels but I can't help it. I read the Clan War series from The Scorpion to The Lion a few years ago.I wanted to buy those on audiobook which is what brought me here. Everything that gave those books personality seem to have been filed down. Rokugan has been sterilized and dumbed down to an even more Westernized take on Eastern fantasy. And with the filing off of anything unique comes the corporate DEI checklists. This is a weak imitation of what was an incredible setting with clear top down direction that has nothing to do with telling good stories but with signaling ESG scores.

A good follow through
Revisado: 03-15-24
Too many litrpgs will have a promising first book and then no follow through. This is luckily not the case here. Kind of similar story as the first one, a mystery needing to be solved and lots of reasons to need to be stronger. The story kept everything moving though, No, limbo situation... partially because they go to a whole new place. Though I think it was a missed opportunity not to have the MC got to class after being afforded the privilege of getting into a prestigious college. Sure the work study route is immediately open to him, but for a guy all about leveling... maybe he could talk to people paid to help him do that? Though that isn't really a criticism of the book more than a criticism of the MC. I don't think any of his friend group went to class either.

Amazing First Book
Revisado: 03-03-24
A really fun book with an interesting power system that reflects the meta mythology of real life comic books. The more popular a comic book character gets the less likely they are to be killed off in another character's book, Our perception as the audience makes their feats more possible, and they typically behave more and more as they are expected to, and that's how it works here. The narrator was also really relaxing... I ended up listening to book one and two back to back and now I am annoyed that there is no book three yet.

Sexist MC that has access to the script
Revisado: 03-01-24
The book was mostly good but there were bizarre moments where the character would become clairvoyant and know information they shouldn't. Like the first friendly user she meets, was "insecure" and spread points around to deal with his insecurities. Now this is exactly what the MC did except she put all her points into strength, but she never even considered that nor does the narrative bring it up. So this was reason to mock him and then he died... the MC also knows that a min/max build is the best even though neither character is familiar with the system. She seems to know that she has to be combat ready immediately before the twist that the aliens are showing up a month ahead of schedule happens. The universe instantly alters to make the dorky dude wrong and the MC perfect and right.
Most of the book is well written but get ready for weird spots where the MC knows best and a comically inept strawman, emphasis on man, gets red in the face. These sections almost feel like they were written by a different person or after a bad date. They don't serve the plot and are the only times that the MC seems to gain the power to know the future. Other times the MC is unsure of themselves but whenever one of the bad men show up, she's sure of things and they are about to look foolish.

Historia
In the year 2107, the world has both made astounding leaps forward and reduced humanity to its most basic existence. While the megacorps and those who rule them enjoy lives of extraordinary comfort and ease, most people barely scrape by, doing whatever they can to keep going. Juliet Bianchi is one of the latter. She works cutting metal in a scrapyard and doesn't have much to show for it except for a small group of equally bereft, fiercely loyal friends. Still, she maintains a bright disposition, possessing more hope and optimism than anyone would expect her to—and she's going to need it.

Best Cyberpunk Story This Decade
Revisado: 11-14-23
Admittedly, there has been a cyberpunk drought. But Electric Angel is a great read that reminds me of the underrated Shadowrun novels from a while back, No political or social justice sermon, just a great cyberpunk story. I highly recommend if you want a well thought out entertaining romp.

Claims to be urban fantasy, devolves into erotica.
Revisado: 03-29-17
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
People with low class who don't mind trite stories or romance novels.
Would you ever listen to anything by Craig Schaefer again?
Nah. Tired of romance novels pretending to be urban fantasy. Label these clearly.
What three words best describe Adam Verner’s performance?
Pretty much good.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
On occasion there were writing flourishes that were enjoyable.
Any additional comments?
Can we please stop making bad urban fantasy novels that just end up being cheaply written erotica? Besides Dresden Files and Twenty Palaces, I can't seem to find good urban fantasy.
