I love almost every Amy Daws book that I’ve read, so I was excited to hear the audio version of this one and I definitely wasn’t disappointed! I’ll be honest, Erin Mallon is not my favorite narrator. She does this weird, breathy thing at the end of almost every word that tends to get on my nerves. BUT...Teddy Hamilton IS one of my all-time favorites, so I was willing to overlook her in this one. The story is great and I love the way Amy Daws develops characters. I am looking forward to the third book in this series and always recommend this author when asked for a recommendation.

This book had so much potential, but it just fell flat in so many areas. Jacob Morgan will always be one of my very top male narrator, but Rose Dioro is not a favorite. Behind that, several aspects of the story just made me crazy. First off, what the hell was the author thinking with Violet?! I didn’t mind her in the first book, but she had zero redeeming qualities this time around. She’s just obnoxious & mean with no regard for anyone else’s feelings, and everyone just lets her get away with it! And all the stupid euphemisms for sex and body parts! I mean, if I had to hear “magic marble” or “beaver” one more time, I was going to scream! And why do the people act like sex makes people stupid? Between Violet using her boobs, beaver, & blow jobs to manipulate Alex & Lily apparently being unable to think because of sex with Randy, it’s just ridiculous. I’m going to skip right to the book about Lance b/c I have absolutely NO interest in reading any more about Violet/Alex or Lily/Randy.

I have read all of Mariana Zapata’s books and I have to say this is my least favorite so far. First off, it’s a REALLY long book, which I have no issue with if the length is warranted. It’s just not in this book. There’s a lot of unnecessary internal monologue that just goes on & on, but serves no purpose. And Luna is just my least favorite lead character. She is just such a doormat....good grief! I understand trying to avoid conflict, but you can’t just let everyone walk all over you. All of MZ’s other female leads are nice, but they stand up for themselves when necessary. Luna seems to accept that having a rough life means she never deserves any better & just takes s**t from everyone, all the time. And Rip’s behavior, even after he starts being “nicer” is just unacceptable to me. You’re going to use a “term of endearment” with someone & still treat them like crap?! Just doesn’t work for me. I always love Callie Dalton & I would listen to Gomez Pugh again. I don’t think I would have stuck with any other narrator for the entire book.

Couldn’t do it. Made it to Chapter 12 & then gave up. The narrators are awful. I could maybe tolerate the female narrator, but the guy was just beyond bad. I don’t know why he though every voice, even male, sounding like a ditzy bimbo was a good idea. It wasn’t. Not to mention that the ages were off. Should’ve made the characters at least college-age to be remotely believable. Mariah had ZERO redeeming qualities as a heroine.

So many things about this book disappointed me. I can’t decide if I’m glad I read the previous books in the series....or not. If I hadn’t, I might not have expected more and been so disappointed. But I would also probably not read any other books by these authors, so I’m conflicted. First off, after being introduced to Jane in the other books, I just expected MORE out of her character. I just don’t get her appeal. Ok, fine, she loves her family....does she have any other redeeming qualities that would make a stoic, hardcore man like Thatcher give up everything for her? I just don’t see it. The more in-depth development of Thatcher definitely made him come to life, I just didn’t feel the same about Jane.

There were SO many scenes in the story that served absolutely NO purpose. They didn’t add anything to the characters, the flow, or the overall plot. And not only does it drag on & on for HOURS, but then the ending is totally anticlimactic! I mean, you give them their HEA....ok, great. But you take him off her detail & place him with another client and expect us to believe that that’s a relationship that’s going to work? You’ve gone ON & ON about how bodyguards are with their clients 24/7 and even live by them, but expect us to believe that they’ll be able to make a relationship work when he’ll be with his new client all the time?! I don’t get it! And why can Farrow & Maximoff be in a relationship and Farrow remain his bodyguard, but Jane & Thatcher can’t? It makes NO SENSE! Ugh....just thinking about all the things that don’t make sense makes me frustrated all over again!

But....the narrators were both good. I’ll give them that. I might consider reading the next book, but it’ll be a DNF if it’s anything like this one!

Couldn’t make is past about chapter 15, so take my review with a grain of salt I guess. I just couldn’t take the lack of backbone from the main character. I’m sorry, but you can’t just let people make life-altering decisions for you and just go along with it. And I couldn’t stand the way her family talked to her, without her ever speaking up to defend herself. I would’ve screamed to everyone that would listen about what my dirtbag fiancé did. And I’m sorry, but I can’t get behind the main male lead and his supposed “once in a lifetime” live for the h when he goes into such detailed description of the other women he’s been with while they were apart. I guess I just prefer my second-chance romances to include a little pining away, never being able to be with another of they can’t have the love of their life. Ugh.....I just can’t even name one redeeming aspect of this book.

Very immature characters & behavior

I guess it makes sense when you consider that the characters are in their early 20s, but it became a little tedious after awhile. The female lead was very immature and whiny for someone that was supposed to be so intelligent. And the male lead just came off as a bit of an idiot. I mean, how many times can you find yourself in compromising positions with other women and still claim to have no clue what’s happening. Their relationship seems to be based off physical attraction, but not much else of any substance. Another thing that bugged me was the way all the characters respond to situations. I mean, 2 women are sexually harassed and just put up with it in order to keep their menial jobs in a casino....I don’t think so! Have some self respect. I would give this author/series another shot, but if it follows the same pattern, I definitely won’t waste hours on it hoping it’ll get better.

The narrator was a total dealbreaker for me. Couldn’t make it past chapter 3. She used the same inflection at the end of every single sentence until I wanted to stab myself in the ear. Premise seemed good, and maybe it would be ok in print, but I will never listen to anything by this narrator again!
