Meh, not bad just meh
Revisado: 02-03-19
While I know what I’m generally getting into with the typical boy hero book, kid appears weak gets bullied etc turns out to be some heir to awesomeness yadda yadda. Well this book does hit all the required points, but in a random rushed manner. The protagonist goes from 12 yr old lost kid to 18 yr old badda$$, between chapter 2 and 3. The all powerful evil dude decides to mill around doing nothing this whole time except send out one of his underlings to take over the one human kingdom ever mentioned (yes there is that one city in the desert) she does this in a kill everybody and trick king to marry her then kill him right after he named her, idk seems like the population would go hmmmm at this. There is an intriguing sub plot with the elves and a mini civil war but that whole thing lasts like 2 days. Then big battle with the evil queen lady, while the all powerful evil dude with a huge army watches and decides to not get involved even though the good guys are all beaten down. You can’t lose when your opponent does everything in their power to screw up. This makes it hard to find all powerful evil dude I mean “all powerful?” Idiot very compelling. Also and I know world building is complex and adds a lot of pages but this world comes across about the size of Kansas- so world not very compelling. There is some painful sex and rushed romance as well. In fact if it were not for some of the extreme violent descriptions , language and sex this would be YA all the way.
To sum it up generic hero , idiot antagonists, small world and a bunch of petty generic secondary characters and there is no moral ambiguity at all - the good guys are so obviously good and the bad guys so obviously bad it becomes a bit silly, all leads to a pretty meh story.
I’d recommend this to people needing to fill a lot of travel time and don’t mind missing a whole chapter while getting distracted.
If you like this trope go for Robert Jordan or Brandon Sanderson, or try Sufficiently advanced magic or name of the wind.

Enough already
Revisado: 09-11-18
I actually enjoyed these books very entertaining some of course due to narrator. My complaint is this constant pres stewart reset, how many times can we repeat him popping back up just gets irritating. Also the playbook of James Bond Villains with lots and lots of monologues at key action points! While the characters are fairly entertaining, it becomes tiresome. I will admit the author is a much better writer then I am, but some aggressive editing- how can John R. Have a living ex wife on a world ship- it’s just one line but noticible! I think an editor could have balanced Ryan’s character better, his constant dumb sarcastic persona becomes old as well. Yes there will be plot holes in a book with this much stuff and if there was not such a repeat of themes with the bad guys it would be easier to gloss over.
Overall fun books I laughed a lot and it even brought tears to my eyes a few times - that means good characters and interaction - just too much at times. Cut the book down by 30% or a brand new story arc would have added a star!!
Thanks

Historia
On the edge of the galaxy, a diplomatic mission to an alien planet takes a turn when the Legionnaires, an elite special fighting force, find themselves ambushed and stranded behind enemy lines. They struggle to survive under siege, waiting on a rescue that might never come. In the seedy starport of Ackabar, a young girl searches the crime-ridden gutters to avenge her father's murder; not far away, a double-dealing legionniare-turned-smuggler hunts an epic payday; and somewhere along the outer galaxy, a mysterious bounty hunter lies in wait.

Very good , actually funny, interesting with multiple arcs
Revisado: 03-30-18
After listening to all these B.V Lawrence etc and other B level sci fi I found this book quite refreshing. No repetitive long internal dialogue prior to each event or non stop Alamo so out gunned again battles. Yes the beginning is an Alamo our gunned battle but it’s just the beginning, the next story arc I quite entertaining and not full of courage and heart will win out stuff. And there is a mystery element that is very intriguing and just pops up in bits and pieces until the end. So you get your battle armored super soldiers add in a good set of morally ambivalent (ham solo type I know) with a scared little girl heading down a bad path ohhh and an awesome sword wielding ship AI who is quite good at math. All in all a nice change from the standard fleet combat or armored marine books out there. Of course the rest of series is not on audible- that’s annoying

Historia
After accidentally discovering the possible existence of a second Guardian book, Lusam and his party are remorselessly hunted high into the Elveen mountains by the Empire agents, who are intent on killing or capturing them. What they discover there may very well change the balance of power in their favor against the Thule Empire. But their discovery will count for nothing if they cannot reach Lamuria in time to try and stop the massive invasion force sent by Lord Zelroth.

Serves its purpose
Revisado: 08-09-17
If you want a listen to a generic fantasy book, especially one your mind can wander while driving for 30 min. I think this book was written by a computer- input-fantasy book with boy add magic add evil mages and some zombies, select companions and basic environments, pick from a drop down box from several mythology types, then click rated PG, violence low, sex/romance at Disney princess level and hit enter- boom wait 7 min and out comes The dragon mage Wars!
The book follows the exposition style, a character describes plot elements and back story. Good guys being chased, bad guys right behind- time for good guys to stop and describe the environment and then another describes a plan and the others say good idea- the plan being fuc$!ng run! It's like there is a pause button for the characters to talk.
Thus my review "serves its purpose" if that purpose is no thought required by reader, with low interest and zero anxiety! Ohhh and short!
If you're looking for epic fantasy that draws you in well go to Jordan, Martin or Jordan!
