Good story, even better performance

This is a fun book, but what really makes it are they performances. Especially the male narrator, just incredible. The story itself is enjoyable, definitely has acotar vibes but doesn’t feel like it’s copying, has its own unique story. I am excited to read the next book.

Wanted to love

I really wanted to love this book. I love the bridge kingdom and the inadequate heir series. Those are some of my favorite series. didn’t do it for me. It started out really strong. I became so frustrated by the FMC. She was incredibly annoying and dim. The pacing in the middle of the book was also a little bit clunky. Lots of repeating the same internal monologue over and over again, The narration was fantastic and what saved this for me. There was also supposed to be a big twist at the end that was very predictable. I wish I had better things to say because I love this author

Elizabeth Evans is as always a fantastic narrator

I wanted so badly to love this book. But this is probably my least favorite SJM book it felt rushed, I think it could’ve been two books. Basically 1/3 of it is an info dump, it was very hard to keep up with. Bryce became very unlikable at parts. I’m so disappointed in this book.

Overall, I thought this book was pretty good. It felt kind of disjointed about 2/3 of the way through, like maybe that section needed to be developed more because it was definitely a during the trials, and then after the trials, and it felt like almost 2 separate books orthat that last third in between wasn’t developed as well. The characters are fun. I don’t love the love interest right now. The main character is good narration is great.

Great concept could have used another edit

For the most part, I really enjoyed this book. There was definitely some major slow moments, especially in the middle of the book. The last 20% was great. The main character was a little difficult for me at times. She kept making the same mistake over and over again. She was a little bit dumb at times, but redeemed herself in the end. Overall, I’m excited for the next book.

Lease favorite book by this author

I read a lot of books by this author, and have left all of them. I really couldn’t get into this book. I’ve seen reviews that said no one is likable in this book and I have to agree, maybe that’s why I haven’t been able to really get into it. I just really didn’t enjoy it at all. Steven Pacey is amazing as always.

Such potential

I haven’t been this mad about a book in a long time. I’m mad because it had such potential. And it completely fell apart. The magic system wasn’t ever fully explained. I felt like the characters didn’t fully develop. A couple of times that were big reveals with characters, but you aren’t introduced to them enough to even know what’s going on. The main characters magic doesn’t really make sense. I just wanted so much more from this book. I felt like it could’ve used a better editor. The only saving grace was that the narrator was absolutely fantastic.

I really tried hard to like this whole series. It has great potential. But it’s just so slow. And not a lot happens. The love story has so much potential but it really fall short for me.
